Backing up computer every week?

    Hi
    I'm new to windows 7 .. is necessary to back-up my laptop every week ?
    I used to use Windows xp prior on my old laptop and never had to do this
    can I just get away with restore points ?

    If you don't have any important files on the machine then backing up isn't important.

    Emails and My Documents are generally easy to backup...But if you don't mind losing them......

    It really does not matter which OS you are running - it is wise to backup your personal data to external media on a regular basis, the frequency of which is determined by how much you value your data :) For my part my data is kept on a separate drive and is backed up incrementally every hour. You may be happy backup on a weekly basis - to an external source.
    System Restore only backs up System Files, not data files and is of no use if the hard drive fails.

    At the very least you should use the Win 7 facility to image your drive - I would say that weekly would be sufficient. A drive image contains everything on the drive OS, programs, data, etc. My practice is to image the OS drive incrementally on a schedule to a second internal hard drive on a weekly basis - those images are then backed up to 2 external hard drives also on a weekly basis.

    OTT for most folk :) - weekly should give you adequate disaster protection.

    I use Acronis to do a full system backup to an external drive weekly of drive C
    only.

    My stuff I just do a copy/paste to the external.

    I only do a full backup if programs have installed/uninstalled but i keep 3 backups (grandfather\father\son). Works well for me.
