Running Windows XP with IE8. While online approximately once daily will lose internet connection. I then open Norton Utilities, run Clean Disks application, refresh or restart, and then I am able to reconnect. Anything I can do to keep from daily running the clean disks and refresh? Thanks Terry

How do you connect to the Internet? Cable, DSL or other? Router? Most DSL modems and broadband routers have a setting for the IP Lease that comes from your ISP. Most have the default setting of 24 hour lease time, or when using DSL they have a setting to disconnet after a certain period of inactivity.

Did your ISP access the router control panel? I doubt it. They probably can just see that the router is online and routing correctly.

Click the link below and login to your router. The default username is left empty and the default password is: admin.
    http://192.168.1.1

On the Setup page look for "keep alive" and make sure it's checked. If "keep alive" is not displayed look for "Client Lease Time:" and set to 0.

Is it your own wifi router or did you have it installed by your ISP? If they installed it then they changed it from the default login usernname and password. You'd have to call them to get the login credentials. What model Linksys?

My router - model WRT54G2 V1.5 Just a note, I don't have to reboot the router, just open Norton Utilities, use clean disks app and refresh, and then I'm able to connect. Terry

I would upgrade the firmware on that device to the latest version. The new firmware will likely fix your problem.

    Get the firmware here.
First, download the Upgrade Instructions, then download the firmware (.bin).

This new firmware replaces the existing wifi driver in the router, thus you CANNOT be connected to the router using wifi when you upgrade the firmware. You must connect to the router using a CAT5 network cable from your comp to one of the ports on back of router. If try to upgrade when connected by wifi the upgrade will fail and the router will probably become unusable.

Scott: Still unable to login using admin admin. User name shows a figure head icon, but will not accept admin for user name and admin for password. Terry

The default login for the WRT54G2 v1.5 is what I posted earlier.
Don't enter any username at all, leave it blank, and the password = admin.

admin is all lower case letters.

If you cannot login as I have stated then someone has change the login. You will have to use the router reset button to restore factory defaults, then login as above.

Resetting is probably a good idea anyway. After the reset and wifi setup, that alone may fix your problem. But I'd still upgrade the firmware.

However, the oddity here is that running the Norton utility restores Internet browsing. This indicates that you may have some sort of software misconfigured, such as a firewall or browser settings, or possibly even malware or viruses. Norton antivirus will not detect and clean all malware. And the Norton Clean Disk in no way interfaces with the router.

If you are using wifi connection software that came with the wireless adapter then check the settings there. For example, if have a Dell computer you may have Dell wifi connection software.

    Your right Tony.
I didn't know Linksys had changed the default login.

It's been admin admin since 1996

It's only ever been admin admin on certain models, most of their models are blank admin.

Tony: still will not accept login. Were you able to login with blank username and admin password?

I cannot login to your router. 192.168.x.x is a non-routable address, it cannot be routed over the WWW, it's local network only.

Who setup the router for you? That person must have changed the login credentials. Contact that person.

your network setup highly affect your internet connection.
loose connections, network traffic are common issue of connection drop.

I had a problem with my ISP with leased line connection that when I reached the max bandwidth my connection also dropped which I dont like :(
