    Hi everyone...

You'd think this question posed by my girl would be easy to answer, but I failed miserably.

She's frustrated about the fact that she cannot seem to find an easy way to back up online email/webmail, such as her Windows Live (Hotmail) email. She does not want to use anything like Outlook or the free Windows Live Mail application. She simply wants to "make an archive" of her sent and received (and whatever other folders she might have) email to her hard drive and/or burn to a disc and/or save to a flash drive...

I did a search and found plenty of people posing this question but like I said, a solution such as an email program is not what she wants. She wants to "zip up" her (hopefully) soon-to-be archived email primarily for the purpose of having an offline backup.

    Thanks everyone! :)

There are only 2 ways to do what she wants to do:

    1. use a server-side program or script to archive the messages.
    2. use an email client or utility to download the messages and then export/archive them.

#1 requires access to the server or implementation of archive solutions by the Web mail provider.
#2 there are utilities that download and archive Web mail messages but your Web mail provider must also support POP. Such utilities won't download Sent messages, just the Inbox.

Thanks Tony. The issue is the fact that she lost a considerable amount of emails a while back on her Yahoo Mail account. Over 1,000 as a matter of fact. What do you (or anyone else?) consider one of the better webmail providers? I'm using Gmail...(Google Voice and SMS rules! :D)

    Thanks again!

Tony, would Seamonkey or Thunderbird be able to do this? ANd does it ONLY capture the inbox, or can it capture the other folders, too?

I have a free Yahoo account that I use for online purchasing and spam collection. I mainly use Thunderbird for my other email accounts. But I also use FreePops with Thunderbird to POP the free Yahoo Inbox and archive the messages I want to save. Freepops is necessary because one cannot normally POP a free Yahoo account.

But when using an email client with any Web mail one only can POP the Inbox, not the other folders.

To POP the Sent messages of Web mail one would first POP the Inbox, then login to Web mail and delete the Inbox messages. Then move all messages in Sent folder to the Inbox, then POP the Inbox again.
