I was able to install a software program on an XP machine.

I upgraded my new win 7 machine to 7 pro and downloaded the xp compatibility utility but I still cannot install that software. I've run the compatibility routine several times. What gives? Does XP compatibility work or not? The program is old, 1997 vintage. But I just installed it on an XP service pack 2 machine.

Although Windows 7 will run some very old software - I have software running on my Win 7 Pro x64 build which is at least 15 years old - it will not run every old program.
Sometimes, but do you mean Compatability Mode or are you referring to XP Mode in which a (free) copy of XP Pro runs in a virtual machine? Runs on Pro and above so it will run on your computer.

I have the XP Mode installed to run a couple of programs which will not load in 7 x64, although they run in 7 x86 - Quicken 2000 is one.

software is Sharkware Pro...nothing happens at all when I try to install. When I put the disc in I get the dialog box that shows me the files.

I did download XP Mode after paying for 7 Pro. Do I need to boot XP?

You first need to download 3 files and install as indicated on the URL I posted and shown in the screenshot.

    Once installed ....

Orb > All Programs - scroll down to Windows Virtual PC - click on it and then on Windows XP Mode ....

XP opens on your screen running in a Virtual Machine.

Install your doftware as you would in any XP install.

I have an XP Mode shortcut on my Desktop, but can't remember if it was put there by default or I put it there.
