Just installed IE 8, mainly because I had to.

Is there anyway to make the search function work like it did in IE6 -- i.e., with a search box and list of results displayed in a panel on the left side of the page, and the web page of whichever search result you click on displayed on the right panel of the page?

I liked that feature of IE 6 -- in fact, it's the main reason I resisted upgrading to IE7 or 8. It enables you to see an individual search result while still having in front of you the whole list of possible search results.

    Thanks.

Hmm - don't recall that facility in IE6, but many moons have passed since I used that :)

In IE8 with tabbed browsing entering your search item in the Search Box and hitting Alt + Enter opens the search in a new tab.

Alternatively use the Google Toolbar and set it to open all searches in a new tab.

Thanks, Pete. Are there any downsides to the Google Toolbar?

I'm just cautious because everyone wants you to install their toolbar it seems.

Not that I know of - I have used it for many years without issue. Do be sure though to go through the options and uncheck anything that you don't want.

The popup blocker, translate and spell check are really worthwhile features to retain - turn off the popup blocker in IE8 if you use the one in GT.

Thanks, Pete. And if I could trouble you with one more question, Why do the links on my home page now open in a new window (with or without a new tab)?

In IE6, links opened sequentially, and the back and forward buttons would move me back and forth respectively. Now I have to close IE -- actually just that page -- to go back to my home page, which is a news aggregation site. I looked in options, advanced, for the old "open links in a new window" button, but it wasn't there to uncheck.

Maybe it's just something I have to get used to, but after so many years my brain is hardwired to the old routine.

To open a link on your Home page in a new tab either ....

Right Click on the link > Open in new tab

or set your mouse scroll wheel button to middle click and use that on a URL to open in a new tab.

Try out the Tabs settings shown in the screen shot.

Actually, I'm trying to open links from the home page in the same window (no new tab, no new window), so that hitting the back button gets me back to the home page.

Is that no longer possible in IE?

.That's exactly how my install works, left clicking on a link in any page opens the link in the same window.

Check that the last setting in Tabs setting dialogue screen shot I posted is checked - if not check it , close and restart IE.

Logging off now - late here :)

My tab settings don't look exactly like yours, but that last one is checked -- and still it doesn't work. Clicking a link on my home page opens in a new window/tab.

I just downloaded IE8 from windows update this morning, although I decided against getting the updates during install (I didn't want to wait to have it go through my PC looking for malicious software).

Try this: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, scroll down to the "Browsing" section and put a check mark in the box next to "Re-use windows for launching shortcuts (when tabbed browsing is off).

Tab browsing is turned off under Tools>Internet Options>General Tab, Tabs>Settings.

That's how my IE8 is set up and it re-uses the existing window when a link is clicked on.

Ooops never mind! Dumb dumb ... the problem was in the home page, not the browser.

My apologies. But your advice was helpful anyway in turning off tabs.

How many years have you been solving problems for me, Pete?

More than a few, I think. Thanks again.
