    I am running Outlook 2007 in my HP Laptop, their DV9830. I have a Microsoft Connector account installed and cannot use it without downloading and installing the latest update. When I try to install it I get a dialog box that says the following program must be closed before I can install the update: "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host (Process Id: 3788) ".. I am not using this program and don't know how to find it to close it, can anyone please help me with this? I would really appreciate it.

    Hello Markala,

    Just a stab in the dark but when you bring taskmanager and hit the "processes Tab" are any of these running:
    * Searchindexer.exe
    * Searchprotocolhost.exe
    * Searchfilterhost.exe

    If so end task on them and see if this fixes the issue.

    If not stop email indexing in Outlook via Outlooks options. Just click Outllooks "help" offline and type indexing the filter field. A simple explanation with how-to will be given.

    I don't know if this is correct but it is harmless and a reboot or a services>restart of "windows search indexing" will return this/these to normal. (EXCEPTION: Any Outlook options you may have changed will have to be reset by yourself.)

    - Microsoft Connector Account

    Goddez 1, Thanks for trying on this one also. Searchprotocolhost.exe *32 was running in the Task Manager. I closed it and tried to install the update to the connector account. I got a dialog box that said I installed it so I opened Outlook and the message that I need to update the Connector Account appeared again. I tried installing the update again and got the same results.

    I have mixed feelings about fixing the connector account, I'm going on vacation next week and that's when I use it. But if it doesn't get fixed I can always use webmail and reformat when I get back. Part of me wants to fix the connector account and part of me wants to reformat because I have a minor problem that's more of an inconvenience than a problem. I keep stalling a complete reformat to fix the inconvenience, but it wouldn't hurt reformat and fix both problems at the same time.

    It's like I'm walking on a fence knowing I'm going to fall -- and I'm trying to figure out which side is the best side to fall on.

    Sorry Markala,

    I was just using common sense and a long shot to connect your error with what I know about about searchindexing. I use nether OUtlook nor do I have a hotmail account. I do use online yahoo for my meager email needs. Looks like I missed on this one.

    I did notice the requirement for the latest hotmail update as a prerequisite to the connector update:

    Hang in there, another member, more familiar with this, than I, will come along. As far as the reformat goes, your in a better position to know when to throw in the towel.:D Good Luck.

    You gave me a good laugh

    I don't know why it was so funny, but I really laughed when I read "your in a better position to know when to throw in the towel ". I'm still smiling about it. Thank you.

    I fixed it

    I kept studying your email and the links you included. I opened the Task Manager again and clicked on the Services tab. I found "WSearch then right clicked on it and selected "Go to Processes in the context menu. I found Outlook.exe *32 and right clicked on it then clicked on "end process. I didn't have to do anything else. The connector account started working without downloading the update. I suspect I had downloaded it in my previous efforts. But I really need to say thank you. If you hadn't been helping me I never would have hacked my way into fixing it. Thank you very much, you are really terrific.

    Connector Account

    You're more than welcome, I'm glad it helped you and you have no idea how much I appreciate you telling me it helped.

    Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been using my laptop for a few weeks and I just turned on my desktop which is where this email went.
