Have a desktop with Windows 7 which is about 3 months old. At the time of purchase, my husband took it to a local shop and had it set up. At the time they were unable to load
AOL, they finally loaded it with a disk with 9.0 with a security version that no one could access but him. Yesterday I loaded 9.5 on it and we can get mail but the home page is missing. My IE is now missing and I need the 64 and I have not been able to get IE 8 to load. Can someone give me some advice?
    Thanks
    Dee

You don't really want the 64 bit version of IE - it is limited by the availability of 64 bit ActiveX. Stick with the 32 bit version.

    Check ....

Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default programs - ensure that IE is set as the default.

Navigate to Program files(x86) > Internet Explorer > iexplore.exe and double click on it - does it run?

Everytime I hear mention of AOL my heart sinks :)

That is really strange - I know that in Europe MS were forced by the EU to supply Windows 7 without a browser loaded, but AFAIK that rule did not apply to the States.

All my copies of Windows 7 (1 x x64 and 2 x x32) were obtained through Technet and are the the US version and all have IE8 as standard.

On the rather unlikely assumption that you have a European copy check in your Windows Updates to see if you have KB976002 - this places a Browser choice icon on the desktop giving the user a choice of browsers to install.

Also take a look in Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs - is Internet Explorer listed?

Also double check the IE is present/absent by .....

Click the Start button and in the search box type "Internet Explorer ", then select Internet Explorer from the Programs section in the results list.

If none of these actions result in IE8 loading then I would point the finger at AOL and you may have to contact them.

Are you sure that IE8 was present before AOL was loaded.

I thought IE was required for AOL to be installed because AOL uses some iE core files.

Will do as soon as I find out, I just felt this was beyond me when it was listed but no path found.Did not see the post I sent you telling you about my new laptop with 4 workable USB ports. The adapter worked really well until my grandaughter spilled drink down my keyboard and that did it.
Thanks for all your help. Are you familiar with Norton's Ghost?

No - I use Acronis on a weekly scheduled basis.

I may well have missed a post - I was in the States for 2 weeks Feb/March and I did not read the 2,500 posts made while I was away, unless they were threads I was involved in :)

It came out as I feared. there was a problem with the original set up and had it had to be returned to the original factory settings The files are transferred, now just to tidy up.
What bother me most is the that the techs at the jocal shop should have know something was wrong when AOL wouldn't download.

Sad to say many 'techies' are no more capable of recognising/solving computer problems than 'the man in the street' :( I doubt he/she has any training or certification.

Glad to hear that you have found a solution, albeit not one you would have wished for.
