Should read, Why do mouse settings change w/ sys restart?
    Here you go...
I moved this wkend and ever since, the mouse settings do not hold. They go back to XP default settings upon restart. Specifically I'm referring to mouse pointer speed (under pointer options of mouse properties).
    How do I stop this?
    It's driving me nuts.

If the mouse came with a disk, did you install software for it? The mouse software will most likely be overriding Windows settings.

Have you connected the mouse through a different port? If you are connecting it through a hub, it would be better connected directly to the computer.

It's thru a USB. The software screws up the computer. I loaded it once before and it was a mess. So, no changes so I don't know what to think.

So it is connected directly to the computer (the same way it was connected before the move)?

Look in Device Manager, are there any driver problems listed?

Yes, Connected directly - same as before, and Device Mgr shows no problem w/ the mouse. Strange!

You can uninstall it in Device Manager, it will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

Check for any programs in Add or Remove Programs that might be influencing the mouse or HIDs (Human Interface Devices), some computer manufacturers install helper/updater programs for their mouse and keyboard.

It sounds to me like there is a conflict with some software program and it cannot make the settings at startup.

    In what area Chas?

If you are not sure where something is in Windows (like Device Manager), look it up in Help and Support.

Look through the list of programs in Add or Remove Programs, you should have a good idea what each program does. Look for any that might affect the mouse.

Something you could consider is doing a System Restore back to a date before the move.

Didn't see anything relevant in Add/Remove,
"some computer manufacturers install helper/updater programs for their mouse and keyboard." Didn't see anything like this.

Sys Restore only went back 17 days - I have no idea why no further.

I don't have much more to suggest Chas. When settings don't stick I guess that the reason is that the they are too hard for Windows to run, so they reset to default.

Have you tried another mouse? (Could something have been damaged during the move? The mouse itself might be failing.)

I can only see this at MS, talking about their range
Resolve problems with mouse button or scrolling settings
Seems similar to what I have suggested.

If it is another brand, try looking up any troubleshooting information at their website. There might be specific drivers available, although I expect it should work like a "standard" mouse without special drivers.

    Hi Chas,

Google has quite a list! Since the solutions vary so much, rather than try to give you a suggestion, one or two at a time, I'm just going to give the hit list, to read and use at your leisure.

    mouse settings don't stick

As a work around it may be worth exporting this key from the registry. On a reboot, you can merge the reg file, and any settings for your mouse should be set, yet again. It may be quicker and will take some of the pain out of manually walking through and resetting this via control panel.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

Another work around, 3rd party software, that can be set to run automatically at startup, such as below:
    http://www.gphotoshow.com/mouse-speed-switcher.php

Neither of the above is meant to be a permanent fix. They are just something to take a bit of the nuisance out of the problem until you find a permanent solution. It is never wise to allow small problems to stay. They do tend to snowball into bigger problems, later down the road.

Thx Ann - this certainly gives me more options.
I'm hoping to setup a new HD this wkend so I can start from scratch.
When I last tried this XP wouldn't recognise the current soundcard (Sound Blaster), but I've since found another SB in a parts box, so I'll be giving it another go.
