Several web sights I frequently visit will not set a cookie with IE8.

They are American Express, Web Page Fun, and often times Windows BBS.

Can anyone tell me why this is and how to resolve it???

    Cookie problem with IE8

When I made this original post and returned to the web site, I was no longer logged in. Why?

Have you checked your cookie settings - Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and also any relevant settings in your AV/Firewall?

Internet Options set to override automatic cookie handling, allow first party cookies, prompt third party cookies and always allow session cookies.

I just recently, after this problem arose, upgraded AVG from 8.5 to 9.0 and downloaded all updates.I'm not aware of any settings with AVG to cause my problem and I do not have AVG firewall.

This started when I upgraded from IE 6.O to 8.0.

FWIW my cookie settings are ....

    Override automatic handling - checked
Allow first party cookies - checked
    Third party cookies - blocked
Always allow session cookies - unchecked

Security - Internet zone - medium high.

I have no issues with those settings - the only suggestion I have is to reset IE (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Reset) and if that works add your customisations to IE until the cookie problem appears again.

I set security as you have done with no changes to the problem. I have run a diagnostics program with AVG (see attached below)Reference the enclosed. I ran each of these steps with no results. I do not, DO NOT, know what component of my computer is causing my problem so I cannot tell you what that component is. I ran the diagnostics as instructed and at this time am waiting for diagnostics to compile whatever it is compiling and hopefully forward to you. My problem remains.

Hopefully they can come up with something.

    RE: Technical Support Form

    Dear Richard,

    Thank you for your email.

To solve this issue, please follow these steps in the given order:

    A) If you are using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, please run it without add-ons:
    1. Click Start > (All) Programs.
    2. Click Accessories > System Tools.
    3. Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Can you access Web pages now? If so, continue with procedure B). If you
still cannot access any Web page, please skip to procedure C).

    B) If running Internet Explorer without add-ons enabled to you view Web
pages, try temporarily disabling the AVG Security Toolbar.

To disable the AVG Security Toolbar in Windows XP/Vista/7:
    1. Click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
    2. If the "Classic View" item is available on the left side of the window,
    click it.
    3. Double-click Internet Options.
    4. Click the Programs tab.
    5. Click Manage add-ons.
    6. Click AVG Security Toolbar, and then click Disable.

    C) If running Internet Explorer without add-ons was not successful; you need
to disable AVG components sequentially to see if the issue is resolved.

To disable the Firewall component (if it is part of your AVG edition and is
    installed):
    1. Open the AVG Program by double-clicking the AVG icon on your Desktop.
    2. Double-click the Firewall component.
    3. Click Firewall disabled.
    4. Click Save changes.

    What is the situation now?

    5. Re-enable the Firewall.

    D) To disable AVG Online Shield:
    1. Open the AVG Program.
    2. Double-click the Online Shield component.
    3. Clear the Enable Online Shield check box.
    4. Click Save changes.

    Is the issue solved now?

    5. Re-enable the Web Shield.

    E) To disable AVG LinkScanner:
    1. Open the AVG Program.
    2. Double-click the LinkScanner component.
    3. Clear all 3 available check boxes.
    4. Click Save changes.
    5. Restart your Internet browser.

    Is the issue solved now?

    6. Re-enable LinkScanner.

    F) Please follow these steps to provide us with additional information for
    analysis:
    1. Disable the component (if any) that blocks your access to the Internet.
    2. Download the AVG Service Utility and save it to your Desktop:

    http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/support/get_netcheck9_en.exe

    3. Run the AVG Service Utility, and then follow the displayed instructions.
    4. In AVG Diagnostics, type your e-mail address, whether any steps from A)
through E) resolved the issue, and the answers to the following questions:

    - What type of Internet connection are you using? (for example dial-up,
    cable, DSL, Wi-Fi, LAN)
    - Do you use a proxy server?
    - Do you (or did you) use any other security software on your computer (for
    example another firewall or anti-virus)?
    - Do you use a hardware router with a firewall?
    - Which Internet browser do you use (including its version)?
    - Is the issue limited only to some Web sites? If yes, which ones and how
are they affected (slow loading, blocked)?

    5. Click “Diagnose and send results.”

We will analyze this data and contact you with further information.

Thank you for your cooperation. It is appreciated.

    Best regards,

I've removed your email address for your security against spammers ....

One further suggestion - if you add those sites you mention, including WindowsBBS to the Trusted Zone does the problem remain?

That's what is so maddening about this whole thing, Pete. Nothing I can find seems to have any effect or give any resolution.

I'm wondering if I am going to have to uninstall and reinstall IE 8 to get a fix.

I had to sign on three times to this site just to make this post. I'd sign on and then try to make the post and I was signed off already.

Try a complete clean out of IE 8 using CCleaner - ensure that only the items under Internet Explorer are checked - this will delete amongst other things the index.dat file and all existing cookies.

It would be interesting to know if the same issue is present in Firefox.

I used CCleaner and seems to have helped some. Still can't get American Express to create a history line but this site is working better as is WebPageFun.

I spoke too soon. Soon as I made this post and went back to it. I was signed off again.

It will be interesting to see what transpires - I am fresh out of ideas. Weird problems like this can be nigh on impossible to pin down.

Under your circumstances I would take a deep breath and turn off your AV and firewall temporarily and see if that affects the issue.

Well Microsoft does offer free support to IE 8 for a short period of time after installation. I have utilized that and response should be very interesting.

Absent understandable response I am going to take your suggestion because re-installing IE8 resolved nothng.

    Thanks Pete.

I would install Firefox and see if the same problem occurs. If so you know IE isn't the problem. If not, you know it is ;)

Spent 2 1/2 hours on phone with Microsoft tech last evening turning control of my Desktop to him during part of the process. All issues are resolved except the one where two web sights do not leave a history line in history folder. He could not even get this problem to work on his computer so he is going to go to higher powers with this and let me know.
