    Hi folks,

I'm trying to find out whether AVG free edition can be used by church without licence?

I have been googling around without a result. The website of their forum is down for the time being.

    TIA

    Hi satimis,

From what I can see ,the free edition is for personal/ non-commercial purposes.
I don't see usage for a church as a commercial purpose.
A church is not a business - even if it were so -it's not-for-profit.
Others may disagree, but that's my take on it.

    Pete.

Read the license. There used to be a clause in the license re non-profits. A church is a non-profit. However, AVG Free version is for HOME USE ONLY. See http://free.avg.com/us-en/avg-anti-virus-7-licence-agreement-eula

But...there are much better free alternatives than AVG. For example, the free Microsoft Security Essentials detects more than AVG free, is smaller and uses less system memory than AVG. There are other free ones too.

    @ TonyT

The license for V7 is different from the current version, which is V9.
    V7 isn't even supported anymore.

While I agree that AVG would not be my first choice -bloated, heavy resource user, especially the latest versions,
it's debatable whether M$ Security Essentials is better at detection.
Nevertheless ,M$ SE is a pretty decent application ,but regarding EULA,
you will run into the same kind of restrictions (not surprisingly)
I think you'll find the same kind of EULA for most of the other free AV & Anti-malware programs

    @ satimis
If you really want to use AVG ,either
    1. Just install the free version and don't worry about EULAs (Recommended:) )
2.Request a free commercial license or usage of the free version for church use.
If they don't .you could tell them that they can - (or will) go to hell :D

Out of interest you may want to read this article as well
    http://churchit.com/internet-security-for-your-church-part-2-of-3/

My personal choices would be Avira Free,http://www.free-av.com/
    or Avast Free. http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

    Hi DiggerP and TonyT,

    Just obtained info from AVG:

    AVG Licence
    ========
    Code:

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. The use of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.

With the AVG Pro (paid for) version AVG Technologies supports discounts for:
    Schools
    Charities
    Churches
    Municipal and government organizations

So church can't use the AVG free edition

    Hi DiggerP,

    Thanks for your links

    Hi satimis,

    You're welcome.
Well, coming from the "horse's mouth" , we'll have to take their word for it :)

Yes ,it is something you won't necessarily find on the front page.
If interested ,you may want to check other companies for their policy
and pricing as to non-profits and get the best deal combined with the best program.

Personally I wouldn't recommend AVG - their latest versions are much more
resource "hungry" than their previous versions, but it's your call obviously.

Another ,very reputable one and also one I would consider if paying for an AV program,
    is Sunbelt's Vipre http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-Office/VIPRE/
While I may find a lot of reviews suspect as to bias, Vipre came out on top in this review http://www.pcantivirusreviews.com/
See if they also have a discount for non-profits.

    Pete.
