I was having slow or incomplete web page loading and I discovered that my AVG virus software version 9 was the problem. I uninstall AVG, and my browsers started working great, but I didn't want to be without protection. I found Avast and install it and things seem to be working great, but my download speed was affected a little. I now must leave the web shield protection in Avast disabled for my browsers to function properly. Any suggestions???

make sure you have VRDB disabled in Avast--if enabled it really slows things down.I`ve had mcafee,-all bloatware really, and of all the free AV programs,AVAST is really the most complete of all.It is suggested that you run the VRDB every two weeks or so in order to build a data base of your files so they can be restored if a virus should attack.

I used Avast! v4.8 and now I use v5 with Firefox 3.6.3 without any problems on two computer running XP Pro SP3.

And I cannot find any reference to VRDB in the new v5. There was a setting in 4.8 to only run VRDB when the computer was idle.

Guys it helps a lot to itemize the information involved, at least what OS is being used and what browser(s) are involved.

Scout321X I am using the same software that you are, except my XP is Home.
I did restart my computer and now my Avast is once again cooperating with with my Firefox browser again, but by download speed (PC Pitstop Bandwidth Speed Test) is cut by 50% from 10mbps to about 5mbps. When I disable the web shield protection in Avast everything returns to normal. Scout have you checked your download bandwidth speed when using Avast?

I'm on a dial up connection so I'm slow to begin with.

Steve's point is disabling the web shield you are disabling the scan of your downloaded file. Not a very good idea in my book!

Have you posted this issue on the Avast! forum: Click Here If you do post there then let them know what OS you are running, which version of the AV you have installed and what browsers are involved.

I had the problem with the free version Avast about 5 years back. I suspected that it was designed to slowly go bad so that you'd switch to their full-up (pay for it) version. We went to an ISP that offered a subscription to McAfee and Spysweeper as part of the deal.

They just decided to pull out of the DSL business in Washington State, so we're now with Comcast, who include a free subscription to Norton's security package.

Having tried AVG & Avira & Norton (AV & NIS) and McAfee I have 4 Home Comps plus 1 laptop running spot on with Avast 5.0 and no problems with speed. Avast is not a resource hog like the others, and Avira played up and their Techo couldn't help me fix it.

I'm another very satisfied Avast user. Cheers Neil.:D
