Ok - the problem is My Computer or My Documents opens up on your screen at Windows startup and there seems to be no obvious reason for this.

The answer is a corrupted registry entry.

    Run regedit and navigate to:

    HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon

In there there should be a value (on right hand side of screen) called Userinit.

The data for this value is probably something similar to:

    C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

If you do see a duplicated string in there similar to the above - simply double click on the Userinit value and edit the data so as to delete everything to the right of the first comma (,). In the case above you would leave only:

    C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Exit registry edit and reboot. No more My Computer !

Thanks DocPcSyracuse. I had tried that and found that the entry was as it should be.
The problem must be somewhere else. Thanks anyway.

Something else you might look at .

Open a run command and type in:
    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll click [OK]
Reboot your machine, does it help?

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

This can also be caused by Blank entry in the Run at Start Up and causing
the system32 to start up and not pointing to a correct path or app.
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] and locate these two Keys:
    [-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run =
Delete any Empty entry like this "/" or " ".

    [-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run =
Delete any Empty entry like this "/" or " ".

Thanks for your reply. I've checked everything you have suggested. To my limited experience things seem ok there. There are some entries entirely enclosed with quotation marks and two that have an instruction outside eg. "C:\Program Files\Quicktime\Qttask.exe "-atboottime and "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Update_OB\realsched.exe "-osboot . Is this significant?

Maybe something simple, but I always check it. Look in Start -> All Programs -> Startup.
