Hello, I have an Seagate internal hard drive and The other day my desktop shut off on me and I opened the case and decided to start with the hard drive. Well I unpluged it and turned the PC back on and it stayed on until I pluged the power back into the hard drive and the power instantly shut off. I did this about 3 times and it was all the same result. So I had a diffrent hard drive and I pluged it in and everything is fine. So is there any hope for me to get any information off the old hard drive? was not sure if a more powerfull power supply would fire it up? any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

If you tell us the model number on the HDD, I could see if I could get some information for you.

Don't connect the power while the computer is running. The voltages would probably go crazy (sparking) and you could damage it. Shut down to connect or disconnect it. (SATA drives can be "hot plugged ", but not the way you are doing it.)

Check that the data cable is connected securely at the motherboard (pull it out and reseat it).

Power consumption from one HDD to another is similar.

    Matt

Hello, The PC will not turn on at all with this hard drive pluged in, It only gets power for a split second just enough to see the power light flash on, if I blink I miss it. But everything works fine with the other hard drive pluged in. What can I try now? Thanks.

The drive could be jumpered incorrectly. It may work if it is jumpered in another configuration.

What is the model number of the HDD?

    Here are the jumper settings
    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...00000f5ee0a0aRCRD&locale=en-US&reqPage=Legacy

If it is set as Master, try setting it as Cable Select, but it needs to be connected at the end of the ribbon cable. If it is set as CS, try the Master setting.

That is probably about all you can try. If that didn't work you would just need to consider that it is "broken ".

Check at the Seagate support website for that model's warranty, it might be 5 years. OK, here is the page
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/warranty_&_returns_assistance/
Go to "is my drive in warranty ", you need the serial number.

    Matt
PS It is quite hard to read the letters and numbers. I needed a magnifying glass to tell the difference between the letter "S" and the number "8 ".

If it is broken, getting data off it would probably be very (very) expensive. The only possible thing I could suggest is if you had access to another Seagate HDD, which was exactly the same model, ie, ST-3160021A. You could try swapping the circuit board.
