My computers do not connect with each other unless my pavilian is restarted after the gateway is turned on. I have my pavilian on all the time but my gateway is off most of the time. When I turn the gateway on it the computers do not conncet for networking unless I reboot the pavilian.

I have my network setup like this: TCP/IP bindings mainly for the internet and Netbeui bindings for the lan set as the default protocol. I have the client for micr. networks installed but I logon both computers with windows logon.

    What could the problem be?

"my gateway is off most of the time "

What are you using as your "gateway "?

I think he meant Gateway as in the manufacturer of the second computer. Do you have a personal firewall? How are they connected?

For some reason this post does not show up in my user panel. Why?

I have a firewall (zone alarm). But why would restarting my Pavilian help connect my computer because of the firewall? Like I said, all it takes is that I reboot my Pavilian computer after the Gateway 2000 is turned on.

Your computer might be trying to renew its IP address, and it's being prevented by Zonealarm. For a while mine Zonealarm was doing that to me. Try going to run/ winipcfg and renew your IP. If you can't, shut down Zonealarm and try again.

I tried shutting down zone alarm and it never worked. It gave this error: DHCP server unavailable.

I have ICS installed on my computers. That could be the problem but it is funny that everything is fixed when I reboot my pavilian after the Gateway2000 is on.

    Any Ideas?

It could easily be a speed/duplexing negotiation failure between the two PCs. Especially if both NICs are set to "auto ".

Assuming you have a good cat5 cable either bought ready-made or else with the rj-45 connectors put on properly (maximum 1/4 inch of untwisted wire at each connector) and that both your NICs are 10/100, try setting both to 100Mbs full-duplex and see if the problem goes away.

If you can't connect at all using those values, back both off to 10Mbs half-duplex and keep trying faster options.

    ************************************

If nothing above helps out then I'd suggest removing all networking services & devices from safe mode, shutting down and removing any modems & NICs, starting the PCs again then another shutdown to add NICs/modems back (although with ICS if you have dial-up I'd only have a modem attached to the host) and then reloading all networking services/drivers/etc.

Properties for the NIC will offer the option. Some have it lumped in with speed and some have it as a seperate option.

I changed it to 100 full mode. I'll play around with this and see if it works.

I changed it to 100 full and then back to auto. So I really changed nothing. But now everything is working fine and that is the only thing I changed and then changed back.

I have no idea why my problem is fixed but it is.

    Thanks everyone for your help.
