Greetings. In searching for this problem with my Outlook 2000, I found this forum and a closed thread from years ago.

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/general-internet/8831-outlook-2000-wont-start.html

This is the remedy from "Brett "

I have the same issue, albeit while running Windows XP. I followed the instructions anyway Since it was still with Outlook 2000.

At the run command I typed

    "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" /safe

This command opened Outlook. However, it immediately exits  and this message is displayed.

I believe the problem with mine is indeed No. 1

On an incoming email, I got an error message that said Outlook could not move it to the assigned sub-folder. So I am not able to delete any messages before it shuts down.

I am at a loss. Please help. Thanks.

Follow-up. I uninstalled Ad-aware, I saw that it was causing this issue with someone else. I fhad installed it to scan for malware or something that was causing my outlook to lock up and immediately go to "Not responding." So, now it doesn't shut down, it just goes to 'not responding' like it was before. I can navigate the menues, but as soon as I click on an email or a folder, it goes "not responding. "

I tried to delete an email. If I wait long enough, about 15 minutes for it to respond, I get the message that my outlook.pst could not be accessed.:(

Unplug your network cable to take yourself OFF line. Then the #1 deal..

What is the size of your .PST file? If it's anywhere close to 2gigs - that could be the problem.

There are a few gaps in the instructions about how to replace the outlook.pst with the truncated version. I named the new one outlooktrunc.pst. Is it just a matter of changing the name of the huge outlook.pst to something else and the new one to outlook.pst? And it will then automatically find the truncated.pst it is now supposed to use?

Also, in running the inbox repar tool on the truncated .pst, how long is it supposed to take? It has been running for a couple of hours. When I clicked on it's window, it adds "not responding" to the window;s title bar. Well, knock me over with a feather and color me surprised.

Also, when I ran the truncating tool, I specified it to only do 25 meg.

    the program's figure say

    2,147.48 oversized
    - 25.00 amt delete
    _______
    2,121.27 truncated size

And of course when running the inbox repair tool on the new pst, I come in after a couple of hours and click the window and get "not responding." message.

2 gigs or before is where the problem begins....So if and when you can get into Outlook - create another PST file and MOVE at least Half of your mail.

Yeah I plan on deleting a lot. But how do I replace the original pst with the truncated one made by the resizing tool? And it quit responding while running the inbox reapar tool.

I doubt there are two files. You're probably just shrink the main one.

in my directory it shows three, each with different names, each one seccessively smaller. Each time I truncate it, it has me name the new file. I tried to have it replace the existing file but it said I needed a new name. Do I import the new truncated file? under file imprt/export? It is still not allowing access to the Pst file when I try to delete an email.

The whole purpose of this endevour is to get you a working pst file. Sound Good???

Unless the instructions say otherwise, I'm pretty certain you using the newest/smallest file.

You haven't mentioned if you can open Outlook yet?

Oh i'm sorry, it opens. But everytime I try to delete something, it still gives me the the message that 'outlook.pst could not be accessed" and therefore doesn't delete. Do I need to get real aggressive and truncate it a lot? If I click on an email, it hangs up and gives me the "Not Responding" in the title bar.

Outlook Tools->Mail Setup Tab->Data Files button will show you which pst file is being used. My guess is that it should be the newest/smallest file.

You can create a new pst file from within your currnet sup and drag a gig or so of mail there.

Thanks for all your help. i finally got back to fixing this after a vacation. I got real aggressive wth the truncating, ~600meg. It is now about 1.4 gig. It opens fine now, I am just going through the recovered files and deleting a lot more. The only thing that didn't recover very well was the address book. The folder had all the names but no associated emails. Which is not a great loss, as I have the recovered emails of the email addresses that I really care about, all in their sub folders. Thanks again - issue resolved.:D
