I have W-XP and I can't Restore. I have tried going back to different days to no avail as it gives me a notice that it didn't Restore and puts it back to its original config.

The dates look like it can be restored to any day.

How can I setup my W-XP SP1 system to Restore?

No logical reason I can give you for this, but I have seen other people with the same problem and they were able to correct it by disabling restore then rebooting and reenable system restore. Hope this helps.

Did your system have a functioning R/S, and now it fails?

Dates on the calendar will be in bold numerals for an established restore point. My calander with the restore feature has never indicated any/every day is a restore point!

Do all restore points give notice it did not restore? I remember receiving that message once from a particular restore point (don't no the reason) but another restore point was OK.

It really depends how much and when your computer is on.

By default, XP creates a restore point every day. The frequency of the restore points can be changed by changing the value in the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\RPGlobalInterval

(The time is expressed in seconds).

Thanks for the information. I am sure my system is in default mode and the computer is on continously, however there are days that are not picked up. It doesn't present a problem, but accordingly then there must be something happening that can't be explained at this time. I will check into it further.

Now you have me wondering, too. I have restore points for the last 2 days, but they are not at the same times. Last night's was around 10:30 PM, but there was not one made tonight at that time.

The "global interval" may be time the computer is actually running, but since I have not turned it off since the last restore point was made, idle time may figure into it somehow. Still investigating :)

This from MS regarding Restore Points...

    When Restore Points Are Created
Restore points are created under the following conditions:

Automatic System CheckPoints are created for every 10 hours of computer up time but only after the computer has been idle for 2 minutes. If this criterion is not met, then a System CheckPoint will be created once every 24 hours after the system has been idle for 2 minutes.
Restore points are created by Installer packages that use the new Microsoft Software Installer (MSI) technology.
Restore points are created by Installer packages that use InstallShield 6.1 Pro and later.
Restore points are created when AutoUpdate (AU) installs an update package.
Restore points are created when you use System Restore to roll your system back to a different Restore Point. However, if this is done in Safe Mode, a Restore Point will not be created.
Restore points are created manually by using the System Restore interface.
The Restore Point and System CheckPoint files that are created under the above conditions are stored in compressed (.cab) format and are located in the _Restore folder (also known as the "Data Store ") on the drive on which Windows Millennium is installed. The Data Store cannot be moved or modified. Each fixed disk on your computer will also contain a _Restore folder for indexing and monitoring purposes and each of these folders will contain a file called Srdiskid.dat.

Thanks for the info. Though XP does not use files with those names, I'm sure most of this applies to XP as well as ME.

" ... but only after the computer has been idle for 2 minutes. "

Which may well not be happening. Some background programs and AFAIK all screen savers keep the PC in a non-idle condition.
