First, check to see if the Windows Installer service is running.

    • Open Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services
    • Locate Windows Installer service listing
    • Verify that the status is Started. If the Status column is blank, right click on Windows Installer and select Start
    • If you get error trying to force start the Windows Installer service, try to change the Startup Type to Automatic (default is Manual), and then restart your computer

If that didn't fix it, download and install the latest Windows Installer 4.5 from Microsoft

For your Vista x64 you need to get Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu

I'd ignore the SP1/SP2 'issue' for now...

Greetings Arie: I took a look (as per your instructions). and the Installer was not started. So I right clicked and hit start, then restarted my PC. When it came back up, I looked again (just to make sure), and the installer was not started. So I am going to download the new version.

I can't tell you how much you have helped me. Thanks a lot. You and this site is great.

I hope your having a good day, because this will probably just make your day. I downloaded Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu, It downloaded just fine. I double clicked the file, I got a little window that said "windows update Standalone installer, the little window flashed, and it said, looking for updates. For about 1 minute, the green line scrolled across the window, and a message popped up saying "search for updates is completed ". Another "windows update stand alone installer " window popped up saying "this update does not apply to my system ". I hate to ask again, but a little help is still needed. Thanks so very much for your time and patience, I'm sure you are as frustrated as I.

I just checked my windows installer to see if it was started and it was not. I right clicked it again and started it. I left the screen and then went right back and it was still started. Now if i restart my PC now, the installer will not be started if I look after restart. I started 3 time yesterday, and restarted 3 times. Everytime, after the restart, the Installer would be off again. I did the same thing today per your instructions. And the same thing happens. How do you start it and keep it started????

Please tell me what to do next. Thanks again for all of your help.

Have you since tried to reinstall the software that produced the error?

Happy Saturday to you ", it is Saturday where you are, isn't it? Yes, I tried it last nigh, and then again about 15 minutes ago. I also double checked after
receiving the message' "this update does not apply to my system" to make sure I downloaded the correct one "Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu ". And I did.
So since I can only thank you for your continued help, and also A BIGGER "THANKS, for giving up so much time for people like me, we do seem to need so much help. And you and people like you are the angels of the computer world.

Please let me know what you need next, and I'll get it done just as quickly as I can. I'll be checking in off and on all day. So, when you have time to get back with me I'll probably see it pretty quickly. Have a great weekend.

Arie, I concluded in your post you were talking about the AT&T USB Connect software. And it was that software I tried to install twice. I was referring too the Microsoft Install software just to double check to make sure I didn't mess up.

I'm sorry my answer seemed to be confusing. And I just tried to install the AT&T Connect Version 7.1.030.
Here is a blow by blow, maybe I am doing something wrong, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK
I install the cd-r ( acquired from AT&T) it does not start on it's own, I go to start button, then Computer, double click Drive E, right window shows "Setup-ACM-7.1.030 go to Drive Ed hit explore, go to the right of the screen and Right click the setup file, I use the "Run as Administrator ", pop-window opens, I hit setup, it says "preparing to install, the blue line starts filling and as soon as it gets to the Register modules, error 1904 pops us. I hit cancel and it backs out the files
are extracted back to the way it was before I tried the install.

Thanks again for all of your time and effort!

Maybe you could answer this?, If I deleted the Microsoft installer and reinstalled. Now I don't know how to do that, and my software came installed on my PC. But, might that help (if that could be done at all?. And thanks for all of your time and effort. I know that you guys (and gals) are really the best.

Just let me know what you think about the de-install vs re-install thing. Thanks again, you have been great.

OK, that is no problem. I appreciate everything you have done for me. I may have found the answer in the Vista Forum. I just started to go through the steps and I'll see if I can figure out just how to do what they are suggesting. It seems there are a lot of people with Vista 64bit having the same trouble.

If I find this works can I post a link for other people to follow in this string??

    No problem, (been busy lately).

If your convinced it's a separate issue I'd advise not changing anything in your system until after broni has given you the all clear. ie, stop going through the steps in the Vista forum ;) it can add confusion to the issue.

Wildfire: Thanks for the advise. I got the all clear from Broni, and my problems there a just fine now. You guys are great!!!

Now I am back to the Windows installer problem. I ended up going to Microsoft Answers Forum, they said to unregister/re-register the install program. I did that and no help. So, I am still in trouble on this issue. Update as I find them.
