This only started happening when I noticed that when playing built in cd's, iexplore.exe (using ie6) is running between 50-60% cpu.

I first noticed that I was having trouble clicking the back arrow when viewing any website (it would hang).

wmplayer.exe (Windows Media) by itself is only about 5%.
Nothing else shows any meaningful %.

    Advice?

I have an older computer, 2GB RAM and nothing else was running. I normally run 20-30% max and have never seen this problem before. I run Vipre everyday and just ran Pest Control, SpyBot and MalwareByte

Hi robls99. The first thing that I would try would be to make sure that you aren't sharing your media library as that can cause Windows Media Player to use a high amount of CPU usage.

Try this, open Windows Media Player and click Tools< Options< Library Tab< Configure Sharing Button< uncheck the checkbox that says Share My Media and click ok when done.

After thats finished click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. When the Services window opens scroll down until you find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Highlight it and right click it and hit properties. Under Startup Type click the Disabled button and click ok when done. The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service should now have a Startup Type of Disabled. Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect and now see if Windows Media Player uses a lot of CPU usage.

    Evan,

    Thanks for the reply.

I checked both of the items you mentioned and they were exactly as you wanted them to be so there was no change

Also, as I indicated, Media by itself is only 5% so I'm guessing the problem is with IE6 not Media. The problem is only that when Media is playing, IE6 gets stuck with high cpu% when I hit the back arrow.

Well in that case I would say that its a problem with IE6 itself. Have you thought about upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 to see if you would have the same issue?

No Problem. Let me know if installing Intenet Explorer 8 solved the problem or not.
