    Hello,
I have an XP laptop w/ Service Pack 3 that suddenly won't connect via IE 8.
The machine is connected to the wireless router w/ a strong signal. I can ping various sites that the machine has been to before without any problem. The diagnostics suggest that it might be a firewall issue but I checked the permissions for the various ports & 21, 80 & 443 are all enabled.

Nothing changed when I turned off the firewall.

Yesterday was the usual tune-up regimen:
    • Malware Scan
    • Uninstall unused programmes
    • Registry clean-up
    • Junk file clean-up
    • Windows update
    • Install AVG free version
    • Install Spyware Blaster
    • etc.

I was installing Spybot S&D when it said that I had not internet connection. Since I can ping various sites, I do obviously have a connection.

    Any suggestions?

Can you surf the web via other browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Opera?

IE 8 is the only browser on this machine.

    What I've Found So Far . . .

    1. No port 80 contention
    2. Installed Opera - Said that the proxy server was denying access
    3. Turned off the proxy server - can now get out to websites
    4. Tried IE 8 again - No joy

    Suggestions anyone?

It's always a good idea to have more, than one browser installed, so you can troubleshoot the situation better.

Maybe you should try re-installing your WLAN driver for your wireless card.

Try manually installing/adding the IP address of your ISP

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connection tab > LAN settings > if proxy enabled disable it. Uncheck "automatically detect... ".

Hearing that always worries me - best left well alone.

I would think in terms of a System Restore.
