    Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to change a licensee name after Windows 7 has been installed. It's a Sony Vaio netbook with preinstalled OS. At the time of OS installation the default name, suggested by the product itself, has remained "sony ". Now, whenever I install third part software where I have to put my name, "sony" is already put down and I have to keep changing it manually. Is it possible to put down my real name as the licensee without the risk that I will run into problems? How could this be done? My user account lists my real name.

If you mean the registered owner, you can change a registry key but create a system restore point first:

Click the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion and in the right pane, right-click RegisteredOwner and Modify the value.

In the x64 (64-bit) version, there is one other key that may have to be changed, it is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.

You can also change the Registered Organization key.

Everest Ultimate Edition indicates that the name "sony" is under the tab License Information | Registered Owner.
I've changed that as you advised. Thank you.
However, Everest still lists "sony" under Current Session | User Name which I also would like to change from "sony" to my real name.
Where should I look in order to have it changed as well?

The name that Everest shows under Current session User Name is the name assigned to the user account that is currently logged in.

I checked it: if I log in with my user account it shows my user account name. If I log in with the system's Administrator account, it shows Administrator.

You would hneed to create a new user account with your name and log in to that account.

That seems somewhat problematic, because I have already created a user account (with administrative privileges) naming it as desired, i.e. using my real name.
However, when I take a look at the user profiles' tab it lists two profiles: default profile (probably not used, because its size is only 1.82MB, modified on March 13th) and the other profile, whose name consists of the computer's name\sony (size 37.2MB, modified today). They are both local profiles.
So, although my only user account lists my real name, the corresponding profile still remains "sony ".

I've managed to resolve it by running a third party tool, called Windows 7 Manager.

It's been only partially resolved. The folder name in Documents and Settings | Users still indicates my folder as "sony ", although it has been changed in user profile. This folder is padlocked. Could it be changed to my real name?

I'm trying to do that but when I'm copying the files located in the old folder into the new, it says that I need permission to copy. I'm logged as a third user.

Does the 3rd user have administrator privileges?

Yes, it does. I've just tried to do it using Total Commander and it copied them.

Thank you. I think, now it looks fine.
