Unable to scan or defrag

I cannot defrag or scan my D drive on my pc. the following happens:
Scanning disc

When I scan disc for errors (for D drive) from win98 in C drive it stops at looking for missing clusters and wont proceed any further. I am using diskminder software to do this.

When I try to defrag D drive from win XP, it freezes after doing 1% of task.
When I try to defrag D drive from win98, it doesnt begin task at all.

Can some PLEASE HELP ME as I dunno know how to fix these problems. I cant keep my hard drive efficient without being able to perform these tasks.

 

Hi, When I was using W98 my PC would not defrag , stopped the same as you have said , long ago they told me on here to go to Safe Mode and defrag , it always worked for me untill I updated, may be worth a try.
Also I now use " Auslogics Disc Defrag" much better and faster than the one in your Pc. just down load it ( free) via google.
It's only a small download.

Hi I dunno, I used to have trouble when trying to defrag the wife's Windows 98 on a HP Pavilion and if I remember correctly, go to Ctrl-Alt-Delete and bring up Task Manager. Then End Task all except Explorer and make sure that your Power settings were set to Never shut down.
Auslogic Defrag works great on my comps which are all running XP. Cheers Neil.
