Volume for File message - Error Opening Microsoft Excel

I was attempting to open Microsoft Excel on my laptop.
Microsoft Office 2007
Windows Vista

When I click on the Excel icon on the desktop, I get a pop-up error box that says:

C:\\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE

The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.

I haven't made any changes to the programs, I've run my virus scan several times and hasn't detected any viruses.

The only thing I know of that's been done were the normal Windows Updates, but didn't know if that could cause it.

Just wondering if I should try to reinstall Microsoft Office, or try to do a system restore, etc??

Just not sure what this message is implying, especially the second part of the message....never seen that before on any program at all.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm clicking the icon for the actual program itself....not a specific spreadsheet file.
