I'm having an issue with the product 'McAfee EasyRecovery Pro'. I attempted to install this directly from my McAfee account but installation was stopped by the following error "RegDBCreateKeyEx failed ".

I later installed the trial version of this program from the Kroll (the program OEM) website, this installed and worked fine. I'm running all genuine software including Windows XP Pro, Office XP Pro (2002) and have updated all my drivers and have sorted my registry. I tried using McAfee's customer support to resolve the issue but they weren't able to. Any ideas?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Did you read through McAfee's web site to see if they had anything on the error?

    Hi Steve,

McAfee was my first port of call, I trawled and ran searches but nothing, then used their tech help chat sytem who then put me onto the OEM (Kroll) awaiting feedback but with the weekend approaching I'm not hopeful hence the form approach as I've lost critical data I need to recover. I've also checked out all I could find on the net about "RegDBCreateKeyEx failed" problems but none have been of help in this case.

What do you mean by "installed directly from McAfee account? "
If a download, save the download from McAfee and then install. If Windows Vista or Windows 7 rt click the file and select RunAs Administrator.

The error is a result of the installer failing to create a registry subkey. Some key are system owned keys and elevated privleges are needed for the installer.

Thanks for the avice - I'm running Windows XP Pro and as you suggested tried installing when logged on as administrator - same error "RegDBCreateKeyEx failed ". By "installed direct from my McAfee account" this was using "run" on download from McAfee's download link. I have also saved then run but with the same result.
I have since successfully loaded program on a laptop.

Any more details to the exact error message?
Try looking in Event Viewer too. (control panel > admin tools > event...)

Tony, good suggestion. Every attempt at installing results in the following Application event log report "Product: ISScript -- Installation operation completed successfully ". (MsiInstaller). This coincides with the error message "RegDBCreateKeyEx failed ". There are no System events logged.

When I clear the error message by pressing its OK the "Install Wizard Completed" window comes up advising that "the install wizard had been interrupted before EasyRecovery Professional could be completely installed ". At this point there are no new Application or System event reports logged.

After clicking Finish on the Install Wizard window the window closes and the Application event log shows "Product:EasyRecover Professional - Installation operation completed successfully ".(MsiInstaller). No change to the System log.

So it seems that the Application log is happy with events but is not recording what was actually happening??

ISScript is scripting for Install Shield, a product used for software installation packages.

Just curious, is the new program listed in your programs menu?

If not there in programs menu, does it exist in c/proram files? If so, the script to generate the registry key may be failing on the action of creating program menu entries. In which case, just manually create a shortcut to the program.

Thanks for the suggestions but EasyRecovery Professional appears neither under my programs or in the C:/program files and not under McAfee in either location.

I tried moving the file to my C drive and running it there but still no success.

    Thanks again for your input.

I thought this would be the end of the road when I found the correct version of InstallShield Installation Engine was missing from my PC. After loading the missing version 7.01 (required to run the version 7.4.262.0 for the EasyRecovery Professional InstallShield) the same error problem occurred when trying to install EasyRecovery Professional again.

Is this result pointing to anything??
