I can't find information on how to setup mail in Outlook. Switching from OE, which has Tools>Accounts.

Outlook uses Tool>Services, and becomes complicated from there.

What version of Outlook are you using? I'm guessing you want to set up an internet e-mail account so most likely what you'll need to do is click Tools -> Services -> Add -> Internet E-mail. From there it will look very much like configuring Outlook Express.

    Outlook 97

That's as far as I could get. Actually had to add IM. But then to setup Internet Mail, I believe I need to use the Wizard, which calls for a server location for mail and a mailbox. My email server is on Comcast, outside my LAN (2 boxes.) Or does MS Office expect another on the inside? Then, how-to point one to the other?

    Actually

I made a mistake above. I should have said, I added Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Mail, available in the Tools Menu. But neither of these is Internet Mail. Maybe that's it?

Yeah, Exhange and Microsoft Mail won't cut it. You'll have to add Internet E-mail.

    PM from Pinocchio:
If when you go to Tools -> Services and click Add and you don't see the option of Internet E-mail, reinstall Office 97 but this time do a full install. The Internet E-mail option should be there under normal circumstances but it sounds like you didn't get that installed the first time around.

I had tried to re-install it. But on your advice, I actually did, adding a few features that weren’t there, and it didn’t have any effect. So I started searching the Knowledge Base once again and came across this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q165228

Which, I first ignored because it referenced "for a dial-up connection." Reading further, I discovered a reference to IMEP, an Internet Mail Enhancement Patch, which included the missing Internet E-mail service; and which installed it to my Outlook 97 Services

Later I discovered that the program will not use Internet E-Mail unless I have another mail service installed. I used both Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Mail at different times, then removed Exchange, because it was not able to be configured. Also found that MS Mail needs to be set for OFFLINE to keep it from starting.

One other thing. Got lost using the KB advice because my About screen does not give any version number for Outlook 97. But that was my clue that it might be the original and needed the patch.

Again thanks. I’m in the saddle and saved $239 by not upgrading to Office XP, which is more than I need today.
