My mouse pointer is showing an arrow and the hourglass symbols together all the time. This seemed to happen just after some MS Updates were installed.

I have uninstalled the updates without any change. I've uninstalled the mouse driver in Device Manager and restarted without any change.

I've checked in the Mouse > Pointer > and it's set to Windows Default and the Arrow is selected.

I'm using a Mini wireless mouse at the moment, but when the problem began I was using a Logitech USB Optical mouse.

I've run Chkdisk /f and sfc /scannow and also System Restore without any luck.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? My hard drive is loaded with Windows XP HE SP3 and everything seems to operate OK except the mouse pointer symbol. Neil.

Is there any software installed for either mouse or even any previous ones?

Does the hourglass seem to be saying something is happening in the background? If a small hourglass appears and you can still use the cursor it should be saying that some (minor) background program is working. Try checking in Task Manager, see what processes are running, the CPU usage and how much free RAM you have.

Look at doing a System Restore to (well) before the problem started.

Hi Matt, Thanks for your reply. I have had a look in Task Manager and I noted that MOM.exe seems to be very active and pops up randomly anywhere in the list of Processes and with varying amounts of Mem Usage. CPU is running at 100% all the time with 439Mb of PF Usage.

I Googled MOM.exe with confusing info. What is it associated with?

I've tried changing the mouse to my PS2 mouse and the pointer is still the same. This suggests to me that it is software or malware created.

My Compaq laptop running XP SP3 HE does not show MOM.exe in the Task Manager Processes and my other two Desktops that my grandkids use, don't have MOM.exe either?????

It seems that MOM.exe is the problem - so how do I cure it? Neil.:mad:

Matt, All fixed:D I read a Google entry on MOM.exe and it said it was part of ATI Catalyst System. I remembered seeing in the MS updates a Radeon 9800 XT driver update.
This was obviously downloaded on 13/03/10 MS updates, but I could not find it in the Add/Remove List. This is where the MOM.exe was installed and hence my problem.
I went to the ATI site and downloaded the latest drivers set and then uninstalled the ATI drivers from the Add/Remove List. Rebooted and installed the new drivers and - voila - we are back to normal!!!!:D:D:D
To those who have read this Post - do not download Radeon drivers from MS!

My Task Manager is now happily showing 1-2% CPU usage 239Mb PF usage and not dancing around in the Processes List. My mouse pointer is an ARROW only.

MOM.exe is gone and life is back to normal. I will mark this Post as Resolved, and thanks for your help. Neil.;)
