So, I finally went ahead and installed NS 7, without getting rid of trusty old 4.8. The new one copied all sorts of things from my old user profile, including "open Messenger window on startup ". That seems to work okay, although I didn't try downloading new messages or anything like that - I just went through the preferences, configuring things to suit myself.

But then I tried to open the browser. Uh-oh. It opened a small window with "about" in the main pane... but when I tried maximizing the window, nothing happened. In short, the program froze, and I had to use the "three-finger salute" several times before it would close. Every attempt to open NS 7 as a browser has had the same results. I haven't even been able to see how it views some of the sites I always had trouble with in 4.x.

Okay, NOW what do I do?

    acelightning,

Try creating a unique Profile for Netscape 7.0 and see if that cures your problem.

Also curious as to which Netscape you installed: SillyDog Streamline, Compact, or from Netscape's site.

I'm pretty sure it was Netscape's own, although it didn't install any AOL junk. It has a more official-looking filename, whereas the other two I downloaded (from SillyDog and from the German site) have names that end in "B" and "C ". (Basically, I don't know which version I installed.)

I can't create a new profile; I have the same problem with Profile Manager that I have with the browser. It doesn't seem to open all the way, and it freezes. The only thing that does work is Messenger.

You can check the version by clicking on Help then select: About Netscape. If there is no AOL, it is not from the official Netscape site download.

This is very unusual and especially strange that E-mail works but not the browser. It still is possible something (like a firewall or AntiVirus Program) on your system is blocking full access to the internet. You might try disabling them one at a time to check it out.

I also have a vague recollection of your having a problem with Java, and electing to Preload Java. If so, this too may be affecting NS 7.0.

    Check:
Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Proxies and make sure the proxy info is correct. Usually "Direct connection to the Internet" is the correct choice.

Try renaming your cookies.txt file to cookies.bak. See if that enables you to browse.

If none of the above works, then I would reinstall, and create a new Profile, if possible.
