    Help
Yesterday I inadvertently unhooked my laptop from it's docking station before it had finished shutting down (has XP Pro). When I attempted to restart it at another location it stopped part way through start up and went to a black screen which advise that windows had shut down and I should try to either start it in
    Safe mode
    Safe mode with command prompt
    last successful confirguration
    Start windows normally

None of these options work. In all cases I get a blue screen with the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to avoid damage to your computer.

Ofthis is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then ressrt your computer.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0X0000007B (0xFAF7B640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) "

CTRL, ALT Delete does not restart the computer even when pressed several times. Only thing to do is power down and all restarts have had the same result.

No new software of any kind has been installed.

    Help!!

Forgot to ask- how can you run chdsk/f or check for viruses if the computor is locked?

    Appreciate the responses.

    Tried Ranchers Repair method.

    Did nothing.

Reloaded windowsxp cd at the same prompt.

That fixed the start up problem but lost all my Icons and windows settings.

At start up, there are two seperate Windows XP start up options

One reverts to the newly installed windows the other gets me back to the original message problem.

Should I create a start up disc and wipe the harddrive?
    Then re-install all my programs.
If so what would be the recommended procedure.

    Great stuff Guys

    Oh No

It appears you click on the rong option somewhere along the line. You now have a duel boot system that has the same operating system. This is called for in bootup in the file "Boot.ini "!
You can do a search in the root directory for this file but unless ya know what to do, don't do nothing yet.

At least now you may run check disk. to do this at the cmd prompt, restart & press F8 until you get the boot selection menu & select comand prompt. Type chkdsk /r <enter> (note the space between K and /

To check desk from windows open My Computor & rite click on your hard drive, then select properties,/Tools tab/ & click on "Check Now" button. Let us know if this goes forward so we can then get rid of the dual boot menu:) Step X step re-pair below
To reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP compact disc, follow these steps:
Insert the Windows XP compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP compact disc.

NOTE: Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, please see your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
The following message is displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to reinstall Windows XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may be required to reactivate your copy of Windows XP.
