My network corrupts data during file transfer between computers with W98. Data transfer between other operating systems (W2000, Linux with Samba) are always ok. Even transfers between W98 and Linux/W2000. When I copy file to another computer, then back and compare it with original file there seam to be some bytes shifted. This is greatly visible in .jpg files as corrupt parts of image.

Anyone knows how to fix this problem?

    Thanks,
    Teo

Hard to tell exactly where the problem comes from since both 9X systems will do fine to another OS. And FWIW, 95 (worst) and 98 had networking added on as an afterthought so they can get a little strange.

    Several suggestions.

First, do some routine cleaning/maintenance on the 9X systems unless you have done this recently. Delete temp/temporary internet/etc. files, scandisk, defrag, scanreg.

You don't mention what sort of hardware but try with the 98 systems both moving data across the network as slowly as possible. Set the NICs to 10Mbs half-duplex.

If that doesn't help, I'd go to safe mode, remove all the networking services, power down and remove the NICs, clean the contacts (pencil eraser will do nicely), reboot without the NICs and then power back down and put them in. Then reload networking services.

If your cables are home-assembled, check the ends and make sure you only have about 1/4 inch maximum of untwisted wire at the connectors. Any more than that can really mess things up.

I have 10 Mbs NICs (Network Interface Cards - right?) connected by coaxial cables.

Thanks for advice but I think that won't help. I've even tried to completely reinstall W98 and things were still the same.

I don't beleive too much in my cabling. There can be some interferences. Maybe other OSs can handle them, W98 can't?

I've also thought that W98 could contain some networking bug not know to me... (I'm using W98 not SE)

I have also some troubles when comunicating (file sharing) between W98 and W2000. The response is always very long and data transfer usually brakes up. Could you help there?

try getting new drivers for your network cards, it sounds like they are working in later versions of windows, which may mean they are using updated drivers. If that doesn't work, then try the cable.

    Best of luck

teoren - 10base2 (the thinnet coax) is getting a little long in tooth and you might be better to change to 10baseT (twisted pair cable) or 100baseT. The cards can easily be had for $15 for good cards. Cables aren't expensive either. If you have 10base5 (thicknet) I'd even more suggest updating your NICs (yup - network interface cards).

With your current setup, I'd suspect that maybe the terminator plug(s) is not quite right. Wrong resistance maybe. I'd try replacing.

I've got new drivers but haven't test it yet. I'll check the terminators either. Thanks for your advice!
