Hello, I am seeking some advice and opinions on a website I may end up getting to create.

The person I met with is the owner of a New York Style Deli in Hialeah, FL. The website will consist of 6-7 pages perhaps and at the moment there will be no ecommerce on the site.

I have to create the graphics, logo, and create the food menus into PDF format. I also have to create some sample pages where he will decide which design to go with. He wants to email out all of the PDF menus to all of Miami. I told of him reachmail.com which I have used on another site and it works well.

I am thinking of quoting $600.00 for the work. Only asking for 50% to start off and the rest to be paid only after I complete the work.

Well I would love to get feedback and if there is anything I am missing please let me know.

    Have a nice evening :)

You can't give a reasonable price until you figure how much time you will have in the project. Break it down into parts, figure approx. how long each will take and add an extra percentage because you will be wrong. Don't forget to factor in any software you need to purchase or webhosting/domain registration fees, too.

I forgot to mention that, thanks Johanna. His additional cost is the domain and hosting. He does not need any software, I already have all the web tools

It is wise to ask for half down before work begins, too. One, it makes it clear that the customer is serious about the job. Two, if he drops off the planet, you're not out the whole deal. Before you begin work, write down what you will do for him, have him sign it and pay the deposit. Keeping it businesslike will protect both of you.

Here's a the generic contract I use, modify and format the text to suit you:

    Code:
    Your Name
    Your Street
    Your City State Zip
    Your Phone
    Email

    Company/Client
    Street
    City State Zip
    Contact Name
    Phone
    Email

    Terms of agreement:

    0. Web Site. Design and produce a basic 4 page Web site. Web site contents to be determined by client and YOUR NAME at initial meeting and via email and/or telephone.

    1. Authorization. The above-named client is engaging YOUR NAME, a sole proprietor, as an independent contractor for the specific project of developing and/or improving a World Wide web site to be installed on the client's web space on a web hosting service's computer. The client hereby authorizes YOUR NAME to access this account, and authorizes the web hosting service to provide YOUR NAME with "write permission" for the client's webpage directory and any other directories or programs which need to be accessed for this project. The client also authorizes YOUR NAME to publicize their completed website to Web search engines, as well as other Web directories and indexes.

    2. Web Hosting. The client understands that any web hosting services require a separate contract with a web hosting service. The client agrees to select a web hosting service which allows YOUR NAME full access to the website via FTP and telnet. ( I will recommend a hosting service)

    3. Domain Name. The client understands that a Domain Name requires a separate contract with a Domain Name Registrar. (The hosting service that I recommend is also a Domain Name Registrar and a hosting service package is available that includes the cost of Domain Name Registration.)

    4. Completion Date. YOUR NAME and the client must work together to complete the website in a timely manner.

    5. Payment of Fees. Fees to YOUR NAME are due and payable on the following schedule: 50% upon signing this contract, 50% when the webpages have been constructed according to the client's original written specifications. In case the client has not secured Web space on a web hosting service by the time the webpages are completed, the webpages may be delivered to the client on diskette or attached to an e-mail message. Advertising the pages to Web search engines and updating occur only after the final payment is made. Payment types are cash or checks from local banks.

    6. Assignment of Project. YOUR NAME reserves the right to assign subcontractors to this project to insure the right fit for the job as well as on-time completion.

    7. Legal. YOUR NAME does not warrant that the functions contained in these webpages or the Internet website will meet the client's requirements or that the operation of the webpages will be uninterrupted or error-free. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of the webpages and website is with client. In no event will YOUR NAME be liable to the client or any third party for any damages, including any lost profits, lost savings or other incidental, consequential or special damages arising out of the operation of or inability to operate these webpages or website, even if YOUR NAME has been advised of the possibility of such damages. If any provision of this agreement shall be unlawful, void, or for any reason unenforceable, then that provision shall be deemed severable from this agreement and shall not affect the validity and enforceability of any remaining provisions.

    8. Laws Affecting Electronic Commerce. From time to time governments enact laws and levy taxes and tariffs affecting Internet electronic commerce. The client agrees that the client is solely responsible for complying with such laws, taxes, and tariffs, and will hold harmless, protect, and defend YOUR NAME and its subcontractors from any claim, suit, penalty, tax, or tariff arising from the client's exercise of Internet electronic commerce.

    9. Copyright to Webpages. Copyright to the finished assembled work of webpages produced by YOUR NAME is owned by the client. YOUR NAME and subcontractors retain the right to display graphics and other Web design elements as examples of their work in their respective portfolios.

    10. Sole Agreement. The agreement contained in this "Website Design Contract" constitutes the sole agreement between YOUR NAME and the client regarding this website. Any additional work not specified in this contract must be authorized by a written change order. All prices specified in this contract will be honored for six (6) months after both parties sign this contract. Continued services after that time will require a new agreement.

    11. Initial Payment and Refund Policy. The total amount of this contract is $_______

There are no refunds of any type whatsoever.

I just wanted to update the thread with another question. The .com domain this person was looking to acquire is already in use by another restaurant.

Is there another domain extension that is commonly used by restaurant websites besides .com?

    Thanks

Depends where it's located. If Canada, could be goodeats.ca. If US, goodeats.us. But .com is what is best for a commercial site.

Perhaps a variation on the rest name? What's the name of the rest?

For example, if rest is called Greasy Spoon, and greasyspoon.com is unavailable, you could use thegreasyspoon.com or greasyspoondiner.com or greasyspooninc.com.
