    Hi,
I purchased one laptop sony vaio vgn cr24 g two years before. Before 6 months my laptop started shutting down in between. Initially the frequency was very less but it increased afterwords. I went to sony service center and they told it was the problem of chipset and asked to replace the motherboard. The motherboard replacement done at the service center and I got the system back. It is hardly 2 months but my system shutdown four times in betwen ie the same problem existing but the frequency is reduced. My system is preloaded with vista home premium.Whenever it is shutting down (it is not restarting) and I restarting manually vista is not prompting for any safe mode, start normally etc. I checked the event viewer but there is no events logged. Can any body help me to find out the real problem of my lap. Thanks.
    Regards

It shuts down? It doesn't automatically restart?

Disconnect any added hardware and see if there is a difference.

Report the problem immediately to the Sony service system where you got it repaired, so that you can advantage of any warranty that applies to the repairs, unless you know the warranty of the repairs has run out [still, then, you could take it up with the Sony Service "organisers"]. It seems the problem was misdiagnosed.

Could you be running a program that "overloads" the system? Laptops are meant as mobile computers, not high end power machines.

Can you "make" it happen? Can you make it shut down by reproducing the programs that were open and following the same path?

    Matt

Thanks mattman for your advice. My system shuts down and it will not restart automatically and no events are logged.Next time it starts normally. I reported the problem immediately to the servicing center and they monitored my system for 3 days nothing happened. I contacted the "organisers" they asked me to deposit the lap for at least one week for findinging out the problem. As I am presently on a tour I will deposit the item after a month. But then also I don't believe they can do it because it is happening once in 10-12 days. One more thing is that neither it is related to any particular application nor I added any hardware to my system. I cannot simulate the shutdown as it is not related to anything. Is it the power management program malfunction? bcz system not restarting and statrs normally when manually do and no events are logged.
    Thanks

I agree that since this is the same problem previously reported, your warranty should still apply. Note that many makers are no longer using the term "laptop" because the lap it one of the worst places you can put a "notebook ". It needs to be on a smooth, hard surface to ensure good air flow around and through the case.

Do make sure all the vents, cracks, crevices and cavities are clean of heat trapping dust and dirt, then use a Notebook Cooling Pad w/ext. power supply. I like the ones with an external supply because they don't draw power from the notebook. This is good, IMO, because if heat is the problem, adding the additional load of more fans is counterproductive.

In the Control Panel, go to System then advanced, then start up and recovery options. Is the box ticked to restart after a problem or is it blank?

Thanks Johanna for your response. I went through the path and found that both "Write an event to the system log" and "Automatically restart" are ON. That is both are checked
Thanks and waiting for your replay

Clear/uncheck Automatically Restart. You should get a BSOD next time you have a problem. Post details when it happens.

When you say it shuts down and no events are logged, are you checking in Admin Toold> event logs? There may be clues in the logs if you can find errors corresponding to the shutdowns. If you let the machine BSOD, the error code is a valuable diagnostic tool, but it may be hard or impossible to get the machine to boot again since we don't know what is wrong yet. Anything in the logs to help us?
