I use Windows XP,having installed SP3, I had numerous problems. I removed SP3 anf found that Photoshop CS4 doesn't work.

I wanted to uninstall at add/remove programmes, but could not find it, so I deleted the Program File, but now I cannot re-install it.

I originally downloaded it as a trial version and has saved it as an ISO file on a CD, before I bought the serial.

I extract the file to the desktop, then run setup

and then it gets stuck at this point

    Any ideas/help?

I think you have dug a deep hole for yourself here :(

For a start I guess you did not deactivate CS4 before attempting to uninstall it? This means that you now have only one more install left which can be activated - CS4 may be installed on 2 computers provided that CS4 is not run on both at the same time - not that Adobe can check that :)

Did you download the CS4 trial direct from Adobe? - CS4 Extended is the version downloaded - ~814 Mb

If your download was from Adobe - no other source is legit - it is reasonable to assume that the program did not install correctly if there was no entry in Add/Remove Programs.

Deleting the program file was not your best idea - there is more than one location of Adobe files in Program Files and hundreds of Registry entries too and I am not surprised that you are unable to reinstall.

First step is to clean up the registry - the files remaining should not prove to be a hindrance, but I would first consider using System Restore to restore the computer to a date prior to removing SP3. If this proves to be possible deactivate CS4 and then uninstall it. Then uninstall SP3 bearing in mind that SP3 is a requirement for receiving critical updates from July 13 2010. You may find Revo Uninstaller helpful here if it recognises the CS4 installation. Note that you should only delete the registry entries listed in bold.

If the above is not possible you should clean the registry of all references to Adobe Photoshop - in doing so you may also lose entries relating to Flash and REader, but they can be re-installed.

To clean the Registry I suggest you use the uncrippled trial version of jv16PowerTools and search for Photoshop & Adobe - delete the entries found, but back up the keys found when prompted

    Hi Avz10,
Check the content of the iso file you made, there may be an un-installer on there. If not Adobe provide a clean-up script which you can download from HERE
That should remove any left over problems.

I have started before the new post, and I have surely dug a hole for myself!!

It did not recognize CS4, but I deleted all other Adobe products- I made copies.

Then the fun started- I used the
Xp didnt want to start up after that-eventually I started it in safe mode and restored the system. Tried again- same thing happened (XP obviously use some of the entries). So I am restoring again!!!

I will try your script next Roger, once my system has been restored. Will post.

    Thanks
    Albie

Sorry to hear of your continued problems - I am surprised that XP gibbed at the removal of Adobe/Photoshop entries. You do need to check the registry entries marked for deletion before deleting - just in case something else has been flagged. If you backed up the registry deletions as suggested they can be restored through jv16 - in Safe mode I guess.

Let's hope the Adobe script is more helpful - I was not aware that one existed for CS4, earlier betas, yes.

I used this script, progressed a bit and could start to install PS, but it stopped with errors!

    What a mess!!

After running the script, it says that there is nothing to remove:

    Hi Again,
When you ran the setup.exe did you right click on it and select 'Run as administrator'? That sometimes helps on installs.

Personaly I would not run an installation from the Desktop - move it to the hard drive or, better still, get a fresh download of the CS4 trial from Adobe - and save it to your hard drive and try again.

I have been struggling the whole week whenever I got a chance.

This is what I have done so far:

I reset the laptop to an earlier date, but the Add/Remove section did not show PS.

I then again ran jv16 powertools, was very meticulous with what I deleted, but had problems again starting up- had to restore again.

I downloaded CS4 from the Adobe site (800+ MB), tried, but got stuck at the same point. "Unable to install Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop CS4" (The downloaded file looks the same as my ISO file)

Then I found the CS2 guide:
I could uninstall what was present, but could not find the Installer serials, probably because it is version 2.

I then tried CS4 Clean Script again, but I do not have admin privileges on this machine, as it is a company laptop.
    Adobe advises:
But this file is a exe.manifest file, which I cannot open. I tried searching everywhere for the programme, even downloaded a massive file from Windows (net framework 2.0 SDK), but no success.

I then tried WinCS3Cleanup. I had to download "Windows Uninstaller" beforehand and ran this script. It ran and deleted, but no success.

It looks as if there is 2 options- get that exe.manifest programme to use or clean the laptop. This in itself has its problems- this is a company laptop and Im not suppose to have my own programmes on it and they have installed a Remote Desktop Connection installed. I'm worried that I lose this as well as XP.

    Any help anyone?

You can't blame Adobe for this problem, deleting programme files at hazard is not the best way to start a repair .

Well, If I look at the internet and see how many problems people have with uninstalling Photoshop from their computers and if scripts need to be written to remove programmes...

But I shouldn't have added the last sentence and will remove it. I apologize
