The laptop was working fine but left it on overnight and the battery went dead. Next morning plugged the battery in, turned the laptop on and received an error message that the windows had shut down due to a lack of power. After about an hour, I hibernated the laptop to head to the office. When I tried to reboot, nothing. The light comes on for a couple seconds, then goes off. Tried it taking out the battery with just the AC adapter but same result. I read a previous thread to hold the start down for 30 seconds, but the light just stayed on, blinked every 5 or so seconds, but nothing tried to boot up. I was advised by dell support that the motherboard may need to be replaced. That was the extent of their assistance. Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am unfortunately not very technically savy, so I haven't tried taking the thing apart yet. Thank you again in advance.

Try the 30 second power button trick again without battery and ac power, reconnect battery/power adaptor and see if the system boots up.

Thank you for the response Wildfire. Unfortunately, nothing came on at all, no green light, no attempt to start up. I appreciate your assistance.

It looks like you'll have to take Dells advice (probably cheaper buying a new laptop).

Do you recommend buying a refurbished one, or are they usually a waste of money?

    Sorry Saylorbilly,

I don't do recommendations, it's your money and I'd hate to give you bad advice. If however you post details of items you're considering purchasing you'll generally get sound advice on these boards.
