    Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me if there is a patch that will allow Outlook Express 6 to reconize the spell checkers in Office 97?

    Thanks,
    Charles

No guarantee on this idea, but it won't hurt!

Search for a file named "csapi3t1.dll ". When you find it, copy it to your Program Files\Outlook Express folder.

    Close OE and reopen it.

I'm very curious about this, so please let us know if it helps.

    Open RegEdit and navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

In the right pane, right-click on SharedFilesDir and select Modify. In the Value Data box, type "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\" (without the quotes).

If Brett's solution doesnt work, try here.

How To: Fix spell checking in Outlook Express 6

If you are running Windows XP and are also using Microsoft Office 97, you may find that spell checking does not work in Outlook Express 6.0. When you try to spell check a message, you receive the message "an error occurred whilst the spelling was being checked ". The cause of this problem is a missing file which Outlook Express requires.

Solution .. Obtain a copy of the file csapi3t1.dll and place it in the folder "Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof ". Copies of this file may be extracted from the file mailnews.cab in an Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5 distribution set, the file win98_27.cab on a Windows 98 CD, or the file Win_10.cab on a Windows Me CD. A copy may also be downloaded by clicking on this link.

    Spell Check

Hello All, Sorry for the late sign in but I have had a medical problem. I am back now reading all the info and find some interesting items, but I can not find the folder" "ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\MicrosoftShared\Proof ". I downloaded the 'csapi3t1.dll" file to the desk top, but am now stymied. I can not extract files from Win98 or WIN ME CD's, because I don't have the CD's. Where do I go now? I checked with the retailer from which I purchased the XP program. and he tells me to bring in the system and he probably(?) could find the correct place to install it. Mmmmmm. Just another problem with XP. Again Thanks, willieboye

    Whooopps.......what happened there?

At any rate, I'll try it again but if the link doesn't work, and its not that informative anyway, you need to look in your C:drive, not in the registry. Once you explore C, you'll find the exact spot to insert the fix.

    Trying the link again

Hi Brett and Doubleu. I am still in trouble. I didn't try the 'registry hack'. I think that is why I am now over my head in XP. (Really erred with registy 'work' in Win98) And what am I looking for in C:drive? I can't seem to find anything which relates to spell checker. (Although it may be right under my nose!) Willieboye, there's nothing particularly obvious in the Proof folder relating to spell checker but, trust us, it's there.

Open My Computer. Open the C drive. Open the Program Files folder. Open the Common Files folder. Open the Microsoft Shared folder. In that folder you'll see a folder named Proof. Drag the 'csapi3t1.dll file from your desktop to that folder and drop it in.

    That should do the trick.

By the way...if you purchased a computer with a Microsoft operating system (any version of Windows), preinstalled, or purchased it later, regardless of who installed it for you, you are legally entitled to a copy of the that operating system, whether on a Microsoft XP CD or on the computer manufacturer's Recovery or Restore CD. If you did not receive one, tell the retailer you want it. If he/she refuses to give one to you, call Microsoft and tell them about the problem. Microsoft takes a dim a view of retailers violating licensing rules as they do individuals...probably more so.

I hate to do this do this, but, just to complicate things further, I should point out that it's quite possible that the spell checker is not fuctioning because the system cannot find Csapi3t1.dll due to the Value Data to the key mentioned above not being suffixed with a backslash (\). If this is the case, then replacing Csapi3t1.dll will not fix the problem and you'll be forced to enter the Stygian darkness of the registry

If Csapi3t1.dll is not in the proper places on your system (it should be in both the location specified by Miz and Abraxas and in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express (use Find Files or Folder to check and copy and paste the file name into the search field in order to avoid error)), then try M and A's suggestion first. If it's in one but not the other, copy it to whichever location it's missing from. If it is in both locations, hack the registry (per my earlier post) prior attempting to replace.

    Best of luck :)

Thanks Miz, Brett, etal. Did as I was told and dropped the file into 'proof' file. Seems to be working ok (for) now. As for my position (knowledge), I would call it below base. A couple of years on the computer, and I seem to be going backwards. Once again, I want to thank you all for the great information. I am very happy to sign off from this problem!! willieboye
