After "successfully" installing Windows 2000 on an old Compaq Presario 5000 which had ME on it, I get the error message that the system won't boot because the 1024 cylinder limitation has been exceeded. Any suggestions? It has me puzzled for I have installed many a system with operating systems that didn't have this problem. Cheers, Vicky

An operating system which uses CHS addressing cannot address a disk location beyond the 1024 cylinder limit (i.e. the 1,024th cylinder), as this is as high as CHS addressing can go.

A hard disk which uses 512 bytes per sector, 63 sectors per head, and 255 heads per cylinder will hit the 1,024 cylinder limit at 8GB. So an operating system can potentially report an error if the hard disk is larger than 8GB.

What this typically means is that the machine's BIOS is configured to use CHS addressing, or NORMAL mode, or possibly is set in AUTO mode and is defaulting to CHS addressing.

Try entering the system BIOS during start-up (e.g. press DEL or F1 or F2 repeatedly: it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer), and reset the BIOS to LBA (Logical Block Addressing) mode instead in the hard disk options.

Then save the changes and restart normally.
