    WinME/IE6 SP1

I have many sites placed in the 'Trusted Sites' zone in Security.
Out of 30 sites listed there...3 have the 'restricted red' icon showing on the same line on my screen where the globe and Internet are placed...all the other sites in the 'trusted sites' don't have icons whatsoever.

My question...aren't they supposed to have some kind of icon or words like 'Trusted site' showing? Or what is missing from my stuff to click/fix/correct,etc?

Does anyone have an answer to my question?

Help is appreciated because I want this to be fixed the correct way.

    Thanks.

The zone (Trusted, Restricted or Internet) should always be specified in the lower right-hand corner of the browser window (BTW - sites which are neither Trusted nor Restricted are always defaulted to the Internet zone).

The "mis-zoning" is most probably the result of the site being incorrectly specified when "zoned" (for example, when trying to add http://www.microsoft.com/ to your Trusted sites list you, in error, happen to type http://www.micro$oft.com/). In such circumstances, http://www.microsoft.com/ will remain defaulted to the Internet zone.

You'll find some suggestions as to what settings to apply to the zones here and a super utility which helps make the whole zoning process significantly easier here.

    HTH :)

    Thanks, Brett.
The 1st one still doesn't tell me why I don't have the icons showing...the 2nd one - sorry, but, I don't care for the looks of it - mainly because of the way it is worded on that website - get an uncomfortable feeling...and I go with my gut feeling before anything else.
    Maybe it's just me...who knows.
    Thanks anyway.

The globe is the icon for the Internet zone. If you're seeing a globe when you expect to see either a red circle (Restricted) or a green circle (Trusted), it's probably because you haven't entered the site correctly into the Trusted or Restricted list resulting in the site in question defaulting to the Internet zone.

There are two Restricted icons which can show up. One is just the international "Do not enter" white bar on red ball. The other is a smaller "Do not enter" white bar/red ball in front of an eye. I believe the latter can appear when you are at a site which has links to a third party site which you have put in the Resticted Sites Zone. So you can have two icons in the right bottom of the Status bar. One for security status of the site you are visiting. The other for any third party site linked to the first site. I believe this can happen even when the first party site is in the Trusted Sites zone.

    Thanks anyway...getting more confused.
Everyone of my sites that are listed in my favorites are also listed in the trusted sites section of Security=30 sites...they are all listed as 'https://www.blahblahblah.whatever' or 'https://blahblahblah.whatever' ...it has been this way since I got the machine & WinME and by following the directions given from Microsoft re IE Security>cookies/trusted sites/restricted sites, etcetc.
So...if done correctly as per instructions, why aren't they showing up as such?
    Trusted sites='low' security setting

Brett...this site - WindowsBBS.com - is showing the globe and the word Internet...that's all...and it is listed in my 'trusted sites'..that's it.

Nevermind...this is becoming to be a headache for me...
I have the sites listed as they should be...in my IE...good enough...icons don't mean a thing to me as such...just happened to see a 'trusted site' wording on a different forum and wondered why mine didn't show it.
    No big deal.
Thanks anyway to all that replied.

Would I be correct in thinking that you have edited the URL's so that the prefixes became "https" rather than "http "? If so, that's your problem. Some sites do indeed have a https prefix, but most do not. If you have wrongly changed these prefixes, IE will not recognise that sites have been "zoned ".

Click on the Sites button in Trusted Sites and you'll see a "Require Server Verification" checkbox. If checked, only "https" sites can be "zoned" with "http" sites being rejected. Uncheck the box and you can add http sites too.

What you'll need to do is to clear your zone lists, uncheck the box mentioned above (it only appears under the Trusted button) and then re-enter the sites leaving the prefix as "http ".

Once done, all should be well and swell :)

Thank you brett ...that did the trick (unchecking the https).
Sorry to be such as PITA, but having read all the info from various forums, MS KB, etc. and following THEIR instructions...I was my own worst enemy!
This site is now showing the green circle/white check... :p :p

Lonnie - phew, at last! Glad that it's fixed :)

Bill - hmmm ... I've never been particularly smitten by the use of wildcards in the Trusted zone. Whilst they certainly make good sense in the Restricted zone (particularly for those who are running pre-6 versions of IE and wish to block cookies from secondaries), I see little to be gained from allowing secondaries to be automatically Trusted. IMO, it's far better for those secondaries to be moved into the Trusted zone only when (and if) necessary.

    Thanks Brett,

I only had two wildcards. one for BBS and one for Microsoft. I removed them.

For a while, I was C/P the sites to the trusted zone but now I use the buttons on my toolbar for adding trusted and restricted sites. I think I got the program from a link you provided.

    Lonnie

I had the same problem you had in the past. Somehow the https got checked on it's own. That's one of the things I forgot to remember. As Bette Davis said "Getting Old ain't for sissies ".:D
