    Hi,
I seem to have a problem creating Recovery Discs for my Sony Vaio netbook (VPCW21S1E). It's running Windows 7 Starter and upon launching the discs creation process I keep getting a message telling that there is no disk inserted into the drive. I use an external DVD-ROM by Transcend and it's fully functional. The disks, which are blank, are DVD+R disks. I tried a couple of them, but with none did it work.
Sony doesn't offer to re-install their software, Vaio Recovery Center, so I'm left on my own here. I want to create the disks just in case something happens to the hard drive.
    Is there a solution?

If it's ROM, it can't write. You need DVD RW drive.

My mistake, it's a brand new multi recorder and it writes perfectly except for here.

    Try a DVD-R. Instead of a DVD+R.

It may be some software issue.
I had similar problem on both of my Compaqs, desktop and laptop.
I had to call HP and they sent me sets of DVDs free of charge.
    Call Sony.

I don't have access to a DVD-R at the moment.
Earlier today I spoke with Sony over the phone and the mentioned sending me factory recovery disks but ridiculously they want me to try restoring the whole partition C: beforehand, which would mean configuring everything from scratch. They suggest this might help fix the problem with the corrupted recovery center. Unfortunately, this software cannot be downloaded separately.

Don't talk to regular techs. Ask for a manager and be firm.

The disks are on the way to me. I wonder if using the factory disks (should the need arise) will assign my Win7 Starter a different OEM product ID.

No, product ID is tied to the machine, not to disks.

Does this mean that the product ID, in the case of a Sony Vaio netbook, has nothing to do with the installed Windows edition? I intend to upgrade from Starter to Home Premium using WAU. Should I assume that the factory Windows OEM product ID won't be affected by this upgrade after I have entered a new WAU key?

When you upgrade, you'll get different product key.
