    Hi all.

My machine always seems to reboot itself or shut itself down without any prompting from me.

I have my power options set to never shut down... or standby.

Any ideas? I'd be most appreciative.

Could be a lot of reasons....
Does it happen, when you're doing anything in particular?
    Desktop, or laptop?

    Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
    Post your computer temperatures:

CPU temperatures looks fine. Video temperature looks high, if we're talking about idle computer.

It tends to only happen when the computer is left unattended for downloads overnight.

It sometimes goes into hibernation...... and the settings are not configured for it to do so.

Sometimes it makes it through the night alright....... Other times it dies.

I don't know if it relates, but sometimes while playing AIX (Battlefield 2 mod) the program shuts itself down.

    Dell XPS desktop system.

It just rebooted itself as I tried to load a video file in VLC Media Player.............. Very random.

    Disable "Restart on error" feature...

    1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
    3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
    4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
    5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

How old is this machine? Did you try to clean inside the case, using a can of compressed air?
Is it on-board video, or separate video card?

    Done.

I got the machine 3 years ago... I do believe. Nope, have not done any cleaning inside. Could that help it?

Forgive me for not knowing the answer to this. It came pre-configured in my Dell XPS system :(

You can tell, if you have on-board video, or separate video card by looking at the back of your computer.
If the monitor is connected somewhere in Area 1, you have on-board video.
If the monitor is connected somewhere in Area 2, you have real video card.
