W/out the background, I want to rename my partitions.
They were D:, M:, P:, and S: and XP changed them during a reinstall.
How do I change them back?

You do that in Disk Management. Right-click the "My computer" icon > Computer Management > Disk Management. The drive letter you wish to assign must be free. If the DVD has become D:, you must change that to "what ever you want" prior to assigning D: to a partition.

You can assign a different drive letter to almost any drive. The exception is a drive on which programs are installed. In most cases, that would be C: but some people install programs on a different drive and renaming that one would mean trouble.

I tried this, but there was no way I could find to rename the drives. Only the partitions are shown.

    Chas,

What partitions would you have on the CD/DVD drives? Steve's response was in answer to you query regarding those devices

Inside Diskmgmt you right click on a cd drive and select "CHANGE. "

    Rename or re-assign drive

    Chas,
Just as a side note incase someone else wants to rename their partitions

You actually wanted to re-assign the drive letter of the partitions more so than renaming the partitons,
IE: Local Disk (C:) > Master (C:) or Local Disk (E:) > BackUp Disk (E:) and so
on, this can be done by right click on the drive name in my my computer then click on rename
    Against
    BackUp (E:) > BackUp (Z:) or DVD (D:) > DVD (V:)
this is usually done in disk management as decribed by Christer

Hope I am not out of order on this
    Jac

It’s best not to change the optical drive letters as it can cause minor aggravation when you run, say, the system file checker. You could have 6 or more registry entries containing pointers to where the files are. They are either located in a hard drive folder (i386), on a CD (optical drive) or possibly both, depending upon the installation. The problems arise when drive letters have been changed after the installation. As an example, look at this registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup and the values of these three keys in the right pane; SourcePath, ServicePackCachePath and ServicePackSourcePath.

    SourcePath is C:\
    ServicePackCache... is c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache
ServicePackSource... is E:\ (E: is a CD drive)

    Does this seem in order?

My point is that if you change your current CD drive from E to, say, X, the change will not be reflected in the registry. Consequently, when you run sfc, it will not find the drive.

It not hugely important but it can cause aggravation when you have to change a number of registry entries.

You've brought up another point. SFC will not run on my machine - even after a new XP install. The machine asks for the XP (SP2) disc, and when inserted it goes on and on and finally stops searching. Any thoughts?
Where are you in London? I used to live in Brockley, Lewisham, and Cockfosters.

You sent me a private message regarding iTunes not working because of the change of drive letters. I tried to respond, but your Inbox is full and will not accept any further messages.

Start a new thread here in the forum, as it will help others with a similar problem and act as a warning when changing drive letters. Also start a new thread regarding SFC.

FYI, I live near Richmond Park but have lived, well worked, in your part of the world in Palo Alto and Bakersfield.

Solved the iTunes issue - it was from re-lettering the partitions. Did another thread so others would know.
SFC - already did a past thread, but never resolved.
    Thx! :)
