If my memory serves me correct, Acer bought out Gateway and eMachine in past months. This puts Acer as one of the largest OEM providers in the world. I bought my wife a Acer notebook about 6 months ago, no problems at all ... can download a service level manual for notebook with full pic's is absolutely excellent. So where does this leave us with eMachine? Prior years, eMachine had a poor reputation. With Acer I hope/feel that would improve. My only suggestion now would list some choices of eMachines you have your eye on and we can see what we can Google/Bing .. good or bad ... from other users of same/similar model.

Memo - Leaving house in 15 minutes, back tomorrow PM.

For most users, this computer looks like a good basic laptop.
For sub $300, I see nothing wrong with the specs. The Intel T4400 Dual-Core processor rates in High Mid-Range class
(all test are subjective to discussion, but at least it is a benchmark for comparison).
No Webcam, HDMI, or N-draft ... nice to have, but unless you need / use these, no problem.
Had a friend at work pick up at Walmart Compaq /Vista sub-$300 November 2008 and it is a nice computer, still going strong.
Here is a thread/discussion addressing the same concerns you have when this offer was available. General consensus ... good deal.
As with anything now days, if the basic build quality, performance, and price are acceptable, what more can you ask for. Time will be the final judge, but having a local B&M is a nice advantage if their is a problem.
