Before I re-installed XP, my computer would power off when I left windows. Now it tells me I can now do it.

    What was reset?

I don't believe there is a choice. When the computer prompts, it indicates all open programs are now closed and ready to safely close. To abruptly shutdown may be problematic.

This is not an abrupt power down but is one designed into the system. First an announcement that everything is closing and then the power is shut off -- or WAS.

Without further information, there are a couple things you can try.

Check the Power Options in Control Panel and see if APM is enabled.

If it is not there, then you have somehow changed your HAL during the reinstallation.

Check in Device Manager (click "Show Hidden Devices" under View) for NT APM/Legacy Support. You could try doing a search for new hardware to see if NT APM/Legacy Support is found. If not, install it manually. If it is not enabled after a reboot, remove it as your machine does not support it.

If you have an ACPI-compliant machine and reinstalled as a "Standard PC ", then the automatic shutdown may no longer be available to you. See what it says under "Computer" in Device Manager to see what type is specified.

    tenbob,

"First an announcement that everything is closing and then the power is shut off -- or WAS "

I wasn't aware there was that option! From a software designer's point of view, I don't see any need or advantage. Thanks for the info.

KenKeith - I think his desire is the same as lots of us had/have.

If I select "shutdown" then I want the fool thing to shut down and to me, power off is a necessary part of that. I was always a little offended when I told a PC to shut down and it finally said in effect, "well, I stopped all the running stuff so you can shut down now ".

Granted, no biggie to remove power from the thing but why have to?

If I want to restart, then I want a warm boot and say so. And it works fine.

If I want to shut down, it should bluddy well be as willing to do that as it is to reboot.

    Newt,

I agree. My PC has always shutdown and powered off. I wasn't aware of any other option nor do I see a need to fill that would concern a software engineer.
