Firefox use to place a new tab on the tab bar for every web site that was opened. Made it easy to jump between sites. I just installed the new Firefox version 3.6 and with that I lost the multiple tabs across the top.
Now only one tab is shown and that tab changes with each web site opened.
Is their a way to get the multiple tabs back?

Do you mean that your Tabs are above the highest toolbar? That's a function of the Theme. I am using the Red Cats(blue flavor) theme, in 3.5.9, and my Tabs are below the lowest top toolbar, not above. All ofof my two 3.6 has the Tabs, at the bottom Which Theme do you use? Is it the same Theme used for FF3.5.x?
There is a possibility that the Theme is not, quite, compatible with 3.6.
But, there is no assurance that a new window will open in a new Tab. I, never, saw any rhyme and reason why this happens, to the point that if I want to open a bookmark in a new Tab, I start with File|New Tab, and, only then, I select the bookmark.

    Go To tools/options/tabs

There is a drop down box to select to open new tab when you open new links.

The options are new tab and current tab. Select new tab and you may have to reboot or just restart FF.

Either we have different lines, or the above statement is oversimplified.
I have five lines:1.Open new windows in new tab instead.
2 and 3 are warnings 4.Always show tab bar (I guess it is needed for whoever has a single homepage), and 5.When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately.
Except for one warning, all boxes are checked, but, if I try to select, e.g. this site, which is a bookmark, but not a homegroup tab, this site will try to open in an existing tab. It works, but I can go a take a fairly long walk, for it to open. If I want more action, I must select File|New Tab.
If I am in a site which has links, they will open in new tab.
This behavior has existed since FF3.x, and the settings have not changed.. I don't recall if the behavior was the same in FF2.x, and earlier.

    Hello Fredb38,

I'm not entirely sure if this is a version thing and is expected behavior, considered as an improvement, based on the version, but you can/will achieve what you want by using any one of the methods below: (I won't pretend to understand why some links and sublinks and bookmarks open in same window/tab while others open in new tab but when this happens I will use another method to ensure that link opens "My Way ". Some of those methods are below.)

1>using the middle scroll button to click on a link

2>using key combo of ctrl + link

3>right clicking on link and selecting new tab

4>or clicking on the new tab, at the end of the tabs, and then clicking on your link.

All of the above will open any link in a new tab.

*As a side note using key combo of shift + link open a new window (new instance of browser) with the link.

    ------------------------
For reference, this may be of interest also:
    Open_a_link_in_its_own_tab

I hope you have tried opening firefox in safemode to see if plugin could be an issue: (I noticed avg toolbar will produce tab problem):

    Themed? also causes a fuss:

    I hope this helps.

For information before upgrading to 3.6 almost everything I opened in Firefox created a new tab.
Example: I have three E-Mails that each contain a link to a certain web site that I check everyday.
By opening my E-Mail click on the web address Firefox created a new tab for that link. If I did that for each E-Mail I would then have three new tabs. After upgrading to 3.6 this function stopped. No more three tabs. Just one tab is all I get.
Goddez1, you system worked fine as long as I am in Firefox. Glad to know that. Thanks. Opening my links from my E-Mail doesn't work that way.
I just get the one tab and that's it.
I liked the multiple tabs as I could jump from one to the other.

    :confused::confused::confused:

Left click on link, hold and drag and drop to the end or blank area of tab bar. This should open another tab with the link.

    ------Hmmmmm----------
Issue is with links in email? Sounds like this could be email program issue as opposed to browser issue so what program are you using for email?

Furthermore, have you tried safe-mode Firefox? I hate to be so wishy-washy on your issue but I tend to roll with the punches never even noticed if, in the past, email links opened in same window/tab or new tab, by default. I have always found or used a method that opens them my way.

I do know that new 3.6 Firefox checks for outdated or incompatible plug-ins and suggests updating or disabling/uninstalling them as part of it's routine. Perhaps the email link action, you expect, was a plug-in that has now been disabled due to lack of compatibility.

To answer your first question as to safe mode. Opened in safe mode and that didn't help.
I do not have add-on, themes, or anything else. Just use it box stock. ( I do have Adobe Flash)
If I use my E-Mail link or use a link that Google gives me from a search none of them will open a second tab.
The method you showed me works fine with a Google search link but not with my E-Mail link.
I guess the bottom line is a couple of days ago everything was working fine (new link opened a new tab) now I get one tab only unless I force a second tab. Just trying to figure out what happened. Got use to the multiple tabs and now I miss them. Thought it might have been something I did and someone could tell me what I messed up!

It is not FF 3.6 per se as I just tried the "multiple emails with links" and each time my FF 3.6 opened a new tab for each link on my desktop. Now I am using TB 3.0.1 as my email client.

Which email client are you using? It is possible that might make a difference.

My E-Mail client is Microsoft Outlook 2003.
The bottom line is that I can open all the links I want but only one tab will show up in the tab bar.
This is something that started a couple of days ago. Up until then just about everything I did opened up a new tab in the tab bar. Something changed but not sure what.

Of which programs? If it is Outlook, I don't know a thing about it. This is another thread which is getting more and more confusing.

    Hi Fredb38,

I have not abandoned nor forgotten about you. I am hoping to catch you online at the same time I am here. There are a few questions I would like to ask without playing tag. I haven't noticed you checking in a while I hope you haven't given up on this.

Ever patient I will wait. :)

Ok goddez1, I got one for you. I picked up a virus and after many times to try and repair I decided to completely restore Windows 7. I did so and started reinstalling my programs. I installed Firefox 3.6 and you guessed it my problem was go. I now have my tabs working like I feel they should. Before restoring I had tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox but that didn't fix the problem. Restoring the OS solved the problem but I have no idea how or why. Might have had a bug but didn't know it.

    no tabs

I agree with Fredb38 as to FF 3.6.

No matter how you set 3.6 if you open a bookmark you will not
get a new tab. I am also disappointed.

I think they left out an important configuration selection in this
    version.

I have FF 3.6 and I get a new tab with all my bookmarks.

I couldn't say if "bare" FF will do it as I have Tab Mix Plus as an add-on.

I just tried it in Safe mode and the bookmarks do not open in a new tab. It must be the Tab Mix Plus.....

    tabs again

The Firefox people said the feature is not native to FF. An extension is
req'd to open up bookmarks in a new tab. Odd to me. So I'll look for an
    extension today.

    thanks for the reply,

    patrick013
