Click on Start to open the Start Menu and find the shortcut there for Internet Explorer.

When you find it, right click it and in the menu that opens, go to "Send to" and in the next menu that opens, left click "Desktop. "

You should then see a shortcut to Internet Explorer appear on the Desktop.

In order to get a fully functional IE Icon, it is sometimes necessary to do a registry repair. Copy the following script to Notepad and save it as IEicon.reg .

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
     "{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} "=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
     "{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} "=dword:00000000

Double click that reg file and allow it to merge the data to your registry. The icon should return immediately or you may have to press the F5 key to refresh the Desktop.

If need be, ask and I will post a link to a ready made reg file for you.

Always an excellent idea. I recommend ERUNT for the job. There's nothing like it and it's FREE!

Why not just save the Reg. to the desk top?

I think there is a misunderstanding in that you may be referring to saving a Registry Key while I am referring to saving the entire registry.

lj50 suggested that kalpesh back up the registry. I think he meant to suggest backing up the registry key I was having him change. If that is what you and he meant, then sending the reg file to the desktop would be fine.

However, since there are better ways, I thought it would be a good time to pass along the good free program called Erunt.

The advantage of using Erunt would be that if you render the computer non-bootable by making a misstep in the editing process, you can restore the registry by running Erunt from a boot CD, BartPE CD, or even from the MS kludge called the Recovery Console.

That is not to say you can't restore the registry backup key that you created but it's much more difficult when the system won't boot.

When I suggested backing up the registy I meant the entire registry. You can never be to careful. But I never thought about backing up a reg key and saving it to the desk top. To tell you the truth I forgot all about that procedure. Memories. Is that how that song goes.

John, You have to take some of that book instruction with a grain of salt. The method you outlined will indeed make a shortcut to IE but it will not be the same as the one originally created by the program. When rignt-clicked > Properties, it offered the Internet Options selections. A plain vanilla shortcut won't do that. There are other options offered there as well, such as starting the browser without any add-ons.

Here's the fastest way I've found to get the fully functional IE Desktop icon back in XP, even if it had been deleted.

Open My Computer, click on the "UP" icon and the Desktop folder will be displayed and the IE icon will be in there. It's always there in that folder. Drag it to the actual Desktop.

Thanks TonyT, That's the best way yet!

We can only wonder why MS doesn't list that as one of the possible ways.

I also wonder why they don't make it clear that this icon is not a shortcut but an icon with special functionality. Likely that is due to their agreement with the feds about not integrating their browser in such a way as to discourage competition.

If you right-click that icon and select "delete" you will be asked to confirm your actions and told that you can restore the icon later by going to Control Panel > Display. If you try to restore it that way, you will be sadly disappointed since there is no option in Control Panel > Display to do that. Very strange behaviour for MS.???

But of course you could always use the MS Fixit assistance to restore it for you:

Various MS methods for restoring the IE Desktop icon. :)
