I am now using Windows 7, Home Premium. Several years ago I used a web address on Internet consisting of the URL ...... about:config ......
to access and then alter the file string: browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML;false
contained on this website list of PC paths.
The users and website monitors advised me how to alter this original string to a changed setting that would permit automatic hard drive backups of the entire bookmark contents to a hard drive folder of my selected choice.

Would someone help me recall the editing changes that will permit me to once again save bookmarks.html to Windows 7 OS C:\ drive?

    Bookmarks->Organise Bookmarks->Import and Backup->Export HTML.

Sorry I've no idea how to make this automatic, I wasn't aware FF ever had that capability.

If there are a lot of changes the FEBE addon is desirable. If not, why not do things more simply, by exporting the bookmarks file?
    The addon site says:

In firefox one has to manual back up their bookmarks. This is fairly quick to do.
In firexox 3. or higher it is in HTML format. Save to where you would like

There is no difference in the format. In FF2.x one copied the bookmarks.html file, and pasted somewhere. Since FF3.x, since they use a different format (bookmarks.json), the back up is in the same form as 2.x, but done by exporting the .html file.

in FF3x is one use's the top two options import/export it will use the .Json
If one use's the 3rd ond 4th option Import HTML/Export HTML it will save in file type as FF1x or FF2x version. After saving it one can click it and it will open up for viewing Works for me same always

My thanks to the responders who have posted suggestions for creating and saving the Firefox bookmarks.html format.

I finally found the dot jpg copy of the BBS solution the monitors and readers provide for me in 2008. This user's steps are:

1.enter the command...........about:config..........in the URL window of a new Firefox tab.
2.ignore the warning that an inadvertant change may have unwanted consequences.
3.scroll down the long list of alpha ordered pc path strings until you find the following string:
    ...............browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML;false...........
4.double click this entry and the false entry will automatically switch to true. Close this window.
5.each time the Firefox browser is opened and closed a new updated FF file named bookmarks is automatically created in the FF user's profile. note: This an html file that you can verify by examining the file's properties.
6.After some difficulty I located my FF user profile at:

    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
    xxxx.default\......bookmarks

7.As an option this file can be copied and saved at in a safe location for future use.

Thanks again, I hope this will provide a simple way to find and save FF bookmarks. This solution has worked for me using Windows XP,HE and now on Windows 7, Home Premium.
P.S. FEBE has been disabled on my PC for 2 days and is not in anyway contributing to this solution

OK, thats good but many times people will shorten the site name.
how can one backup the full name of the site itself? As in www.aaaaaaa.com or is this even possible?

    thanks,

Copy and paste the site name you want to use. when you click save you can edit the name in the save name button Copy the URL name of the site or name it as you like save, and it will show that name in your bookmarks

that works but i was hoping to save them in a text or delimited format vs html. Saving it in html only saves the name (what you called it) and not the actual site id. At least, i haven't been able to find a way to do this except for a copy/paste, one at a time process.

    I'll keep looking, thanks,
