Every time we change the clocks...

Netscape 4.8 (on a Win95 machine) always behaves weirdly when we switch back and forth between Daylight Time and Standard Time. I got the usual "Bookmarks have changed - reloading" messages for 24 hours after the time change, and just ignored it. But Netscape Messenger seems to have gotten even more confused. Every time I empty the Trash, or close Messenger, it rebuilds summary files for some random selection of my mail folders, even if it just rebuilt the same summary file a few minutes ago. This seems to be unique to 4.8, as I don't recall this happening with any previous versions of Netscape. It's not really a "problem ", but it's a bit annoying. Does anyone have any idea what causes this?

(I downloaded several different install programs for different versions of NS 7, but I haven't yet had the courage to try any of them - I depend so heavily on Netscape, it would take quite a bit of work to repair the damage if anything went wrong.)

In Preferences|Advanced|Mail & Newsgroups|Disk Space,
under "All Messages" have you enabled the option "Automatically compact folders when it will save over xxx kB "? Although 100 kb" is the default value, it can be adjusted to compact folders more or less frequently. If you have it set to compact folders more frequently, I'm wondering if this could be your problem.

I understand your reluctance to switch to Netscape 7.0; however, it is quite compatible with 4.8, and the two can be run simultaneously. Before I summoned the courage to use 7.0 as my default Mail program, I kept my 4.79 Messenger open while browsing with 7.0. FWIW...

I had it set to 1 KB - originally, I did this because I was starting to run short of disk space, but with the second, larger HD installed, I guess I should have changed it. But it never rebuilt the summary files this often before the time change.

I just changed it to 100 KB in my Preferences... and it's still doing the same thing. Weird.

I guess I ought to try NS 7, as soon as I've got the free time to do the install... thanks.
