I have a Dell sx280 that had bad caps. I replaced the caps and the machine now boots although it cycles a few times before booting finally. I sometimes get a Iltr message about failed boot and I let it run and it boots to windows. The problem is the fan. It is so loud and sounds like a plane. It gets loud and then soft depending if I am trying to run a program. Please help:confused:

Have you tried opening and blowing any and all dust out of it?

    Loud fan

    Hello
I inspected the inside and it did not seem too dusty but will blow it with the dust spray. It seems like it could be the heatsink but not sure. I also wondered if it could be the fan itself.

It's unlikely to be the heat sink unless you've removed it and replaced it without cleaning residual thermal paste and re applying a fresh coat. Have you done that?

It's possible there's other undetected defects on the m/board, if the capacitors failed is it possible the temperature sensors did as well?

As you say though, it could just be the fan is nearing end of life.

Okay. I sprayed it and rebooted. Boots up quietly and then when I open a program it is like an airplane engine reving up and then it will quiet down. When I am not running a program it sounds like my other Dell sx280.
The MB is rebuilt with replaced capacitors and I really think the heat sensor could be the issue. Is that something that can be checked? or replaced or simply replace the fan.

Just confirm, have you at any point removed the heatsink?

If you have, did you clean residual thermal paste and re apply?

On this one I removed the copper piece and saw a little grey paste and placed that back on. I did not wipe it off. Should I? do I need to get this special paste from a tech store? How much do I apply? Thanks

    That be the heatsink :)

That be the thermal paste :)

    Yes.

    Yep, or online.

Artic Silver has good recommendations, instructions for cleaning heatsink and applying artic silver can be found here.
