So my boss some time ago has a hard drive which is rapidly filling up and decides to take it to the Geek Squad and have them install a new larger drive and transfer all from (a) to (b).

WorstBuy had a sale on 250GB drives but when he got there they were "out" of them, so he got a "500GB" drive instead.

All got transferred and the computer works just fine, but I went and was poking around in it and found they'd mde the "C" partition to be 100GB and the "D" partition the rest of the drive.

I was wondering if there is some sort of limitation on a bootable partition under NTFS / XP, or: why did they "doo tha dere ", instead of giving him a larger portion of the hard drive as a "C" partition?

If there's no problem with increasing the partition size, can I install PMagic or one of it's clones and increase the "C" partition?

    Curious in Philly

No size limitations would apply in this situation. They likely did that since they subscribe to the concept that the operating system should be on one partition and personal data on another. Many people like it that way. (I'm not one)

That would be one way to change it. It will generally go without a hitch but I'd recommend having a backup, just in case the power fails or Murphy gets involved.

When the OS is in a partition by itself and it becomes necessary to do a clean install due to viruses, etc everything on that partition is vulnerable and likely to be lost. If you have two partitions (C: and D: ) and you put all your private stuff on D: then it is still there after reinstalling the OS on C: I keep three partitions: C: for the OS, D: for most everything else but backups, and E: for backups.

    Thenkew!

Thanks Surfer... as usual, you got the goods!

Scout, I hear what you're saying and I like having a backup on the hard drive "JIC ", but my whole drive is backed up to two external USB drives as well, one of which stays at home while the other one comes in to work, then vice-versa the next day... that way I'm never more than a day behind if the office explodes or Godzilla (my Ex-Wife) should come to visit.

I'll wave my "magic" wand and fix this puppy.

What puzzled me was the adamancy with which "Da Geekz" told the Boss that he COULDN'T have equal partitioning due to the great ae of the confuzer... I'm putting that down to "Letz-Sell-Him-A-New-One "-itis.

    Donkeyshines!
