I have just had to reformat and re-install Windows XP Pro.
My motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EG41MF-US2H) is only 6 months old and before I reformatted and reinstalled all HARDWARE worked correctly. It has onboard sound like most motherboards.

After Windows finished installing I inserted the CD which came with the motherboard and installed all the drivers (including the one for Realtek).
I cannot get ANY SOUND. I have checked Device Manager for Sound and cannot see any problems. Volume levels are set to maximum. Neither my speakers (plugged into the back of the PC) or headphones (plugged into the front of the PC) produce any sound.

I seem to remember once before having this same problem with a different older motherboard and could not get sound but cannot remember what I did to get it to work.

I am hoping that one of the learned readers of this post can help me locate the problem and fix it.
    Any ideas?

Video cards sound might be set as default.

Check that motherboard’s Realtek HD Audio output is the default device in:
Start – Control Panel – Sounds and Audio Devices – Audio tab, Sound playback: Default device

In Speaker settings (same tab) – Advanced - check that have: No Speakers ISN’T selected.

Also - suggest that you go to Gigabyte and check for latest drivers, bios.
New ones, including Audio, are pretty recent.

    Gigabyte

Verify rev# of the board 1.0 or 1.1 to download right ones.

    Thanks for your reply.
I just went to cancel this post as I found that within the Realtek HD audio manager I needed to enable front panel etc.
I have worked with PCs for many years having built quite a few but had forgotten that with this particular m/b you need to go in and enable certain things for them to work. It seems like 'reverse Polish' (as they say) that these things don't get set by default and leave it to the user to disable if they want.
    Thanks again for your reply.

You can't 'cancel' a post, but you should mark it as Resolved.
