My friend just downloaded drivers for his video card. They where right from the Nvidia site and for the right card and everything.
After it installed it told him to restart, which he did but when it booted back up the screen was black. It didn't turn on at all(the screen).
Cant get to BIOS or safemode, well maybe he can but the screen is black so you wouldn't know.
When you plug a monitor in you can get it to work in safemode.
If you try to run it in normal mode the screen turns black after the loading windows thing is done.
Before this he wasn't able to use it in normal either because the screen would just be a bunch of colors
the startup isnt right either... it flashes some random things, it may be text but its too fat to realy tell. then if you hit F8 the menu for booting comes up.

Also once in awile it says you sould system restore when you start up. If you do it nothing changes

I think that it i whipe all the graphics drivers on it and install new ones it will work. Im not too sure how to delete the old ones though.

Hi Aisukaze. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

It looks like the graphics card driver has become corrupted. Try this, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Once you are in Safe Mode click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a Program and remove the Nvidia drivers from the computer.

After thats finished click Start and in the search box type Device Manager. When Device Manager appears in the search results click on it. Once Device Manager opens expand Display Adapters and right click on your graphics card and select uninstall. Once you have removed your graphics card, reboot the computer. Windows should recognize the graphics card and install the generic windows driver.

Could you tell me what the name of the graphics card is? Thanks.

The back light does come on, but nothing else

Ok, is the computer running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows 7?

If its 32-bit download the driver from here.

If its 64-bit then download the driver from here.

Ok try downloading an older version on that driver from here.

If that doesn't work then I'm afraid I'm all out of ideas. :(

It seems that a lot of people are having issues with that graphics card. Take a look here.

I downloaded the drivers, when i tried to run setup it said that it couldn't find compatible hardware.
is there a way to manually install the drivers?

Hmm, very puzzling. Don't worry about the setup file not finding compatible hardware.

Try this, go into Device Manager and expand your graphics adapter. Right click on it and click update driver. Allow Window Update to search for a driver and if one is found it will automatically download and install it for you.

So it seems to have fixed its self...
I decided to work on it again.. just mess around... was booting up.. then noticed that it was on both screens... everything works perfectly fine now...
i did get the older drivers to load but it didn't make a difference earlier.

I still don't trust it though gonna restart it and see what happens.

I brought the laptop back to him, we started it up, worked fine no problems.
He tried a little later to use it but its back to the way it was.
You can only use it on safe mode.
He also said that it keeps trying to read a dick, even though there is none in the drive, it will spin up and the light blinks then stops.

Hmm. Those sympotoms don't really sound good at all. Based on the problem at hand it looks like that labtop is having serious issues. Since the driver doesn't seem to work properly then I'd say that the graphics card has failed.

There isn't really anything else that I can suggest other than having a computer tech actually physically look at the labtop and determine if the graphics card has failed or not.

He was saying that his laptop gets very hot, i noticed this too while working on it.
Im guessing that the heat fried his graphics card.
Tomorrow were going to see if you can take it out and hope there is onboard graphics.

If not do you know a place to buy laptop graphics cards? newegg doesn't have any.

From my experience, hardware (graphics) can overheat because of incorrect drivers.

Have the chipset drivers been updated (or even installed)?

Is it set for using an external screen/projector, rather than "clone" of the screens? You say it works using an external monitor. Is it a manufacturer's setting? (My Lenovo uses an Fn + F# set of keystrokes for making a different combination of screens, eg, laptop screen alone, laptop + external monitor, laptop + projector).

My best suggestion, get the drivers from the laptop manufacturer's website.

    Aisukaze,

You may be well advised to investigate (Google for starters) any problems with the specific model laptop and NVidia. Although you never mention the manufacturer or model #, there were several laptop manufacturers that experienced overheating issues with NVidia. Your friend's computer may have been included in a recall.

    Good Luck
    ;)

I just installed the chipset drivers, not sure if they where before. It didnt change anything
Its set to clone the screen, but only shows up on a separate monitor now. It used to just be the laptop screen.

I attempted to find the card but there is no panel to it... only the hard drive and CMOS.

I had already done some googling, thats actually how i found this site. I haven't looked for this specific model though, ill do it now. Thanks :)

From what iv seen there is a know problem with this series of laptop. There is a way to replace the laptop but this exact model isn't on the list of eligible models.

I also took apart the laptop, i couldn't get to the graphics card though. There was something still attached but i wouldn't find any screws or clips anywhere...

Some labtops have their graphics card integrated with the motherboard so it can't be removed. Is there a possibility that you could get a replacement or even a new labtop?
