Whenever I click once (left) on a file or folder, the intention is to select it, only. And when I click (left) twice on a file or folder, I would like to activate or open it.

To me, the selection and the opening (or activation) of a file are two separate processes, and should be kept that way.

Unfortunately, as result of some registry change, whenever I click once on a file or folder, the system interprets my click as a command to activate or open the file or folder. To the best of my recollection, I never have chosen even temporarily to use a single-click for anything.

I suspect the changes were made as a result of a Windows patch update, and should be easy to undo-- if I can find the registry key defining how many clicks to open a file or folder.

Check out the setting in Windows Explorer .....

Tools > Folder Options > General tab ....

Click items as follows - ensure that Double-click to open an item (single-click to select) is checked.

I do not think this is the result of a recent Windows update - I have no issues on 2 fully patched XP boxes.

If the problem persists try another mouse, your's may have developed a fault.

PeteC-- Thanks, but when the trouble began in earnest (consistently), I checked and rechecked the settings you prescribe.

However, your idea about mousal dysfunction is more promising of results, since I have begun to suspect I need to swap out my favorite (very old) mouse and see what difference, if any, that makes.

    Will let you know, soon.

Nope, but good guess. Steve. This is a standard desktop, but am working on the prospect of swapping mice to see what difference, if any. that makes.
