Just finished my new build i7 pc, installed windows 7 and for some reason it just won't power off when I shut down. Monitor turns off and hard disks etc turn off but the power supply and front panel as well as the fans all stay on. Through searching the forums I know this is a common problem with windows 7 and no one has found a solid solution for it yet. I ain't got firewire enabled in the bios as some have found this can cause similar symptoms and all usb devices have been disconnected and the on board audio is disabled, also updated to the latest BIOS. I read one guy swapped over his hard disk using the exact same system but with XP installed so I tried this and my hardware works fine with xp shutting down the pc as it should. Any help or advise with this could prevent a good quality system from being thrown out the window lol!

    cheers

Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what might be running?

You have the latest MB chipset drivers? Also, it sounds like an ACPI bios issue. Try fiddling with bios settings for power mgmt.

yeah, have all the latest drivers installed, spent a whole night well into the early hours trying out different bios and power management settings. There are no apps running and the processes usage are all at zero just before i shut down. It ain't a hardware problem as the system runs perfect with a hard disk swap/XP install and it shuts down properly every time. I'm gonna do another hard disk swap/fresh Windows 7 install and see if this cures it......dam!

guess it has something to do with power supply...
I got similar issue before with windows xp though and it turned out that my new power supply is causing it. I just hope it will be that easy to you too. :D

Just a thought, you do have the status of the Shut down button set to "Shut Down" and not the default status of "sleep" These are options in the Power applet.

yip, power button set to shut down. Done a fresh install last night and the same problem is back, I'm at a total loss as to what's causing this. My power supply is a good quality 1000 watt job and is new. I'm gonna try a swap out tho just in case there is some sort of incompatibility problem. It's strange how everything is fine with XP with no shutdown problems at all???? There seems to be a lot of windows 7 computers out there tho with the same issue, buggy acpi drivers maybe?

Make sure you have the latest BIOS code installed.
